Now before you all jump up and down with omg is this a mod? is this a trick? No its neither its actually a cheap laptop cooler made by Antec YES this model it puts zalmans pretty much every other cooler to shame when it comes to HDD cooling. Notice i say HDD cooling.

Over the holidays i spent my time at my Mom and Pops house, and brought my laptop with me, I forgot my laptop cooler, and my brother so happened to have a spare the antec. I was a bit skeptical cause my notepal infinite would do the job, but the HDD always hovered around 55-60c normal usage and hit 61-63c running a full scan on anti virus. Nothing to serious, yet things could be better. Im not to overly concerned about my CPU or GPU running hot as those are in the norm range on or off a cooler.

So for giggles i decided to run some tests on the antec cooler. Low and behold on just regular no load usage my HDD was at 38-41c on load it was at 41-44c and running it with kaspersky full deep scan which takes 2-3hrs to complete it never went over 55c Man i should of taken screen shots with it i was so suprised! this cheap lil cooler was the runestone i have been looking for! Ill probably repost with screen shots again when i go visit my mom and pops for new years.

I guess what they say is true got to find the right laptop cooler for your laptop so far this Antec is the winner for me! anyone want a notepal infinite?? haha..

One more thing Ambient temp is 80F and humid in Hawaii. it does get cooler but not by much at my mom and pops house during testing ambient temp was around 78-80F

Yes, it's a pretty good cooler. Pcmicroworks gives it with their warranty package. :)

Question is, were you running it on high or low setting?

Woah, seems interesting. Just realized my Zalman doesn't work correctly: the airflow is almost non-existant so I'm stuck returning it, paying $20-30 of shipping. If I can't get an exchange, I'll give a shot at the Antec :)

Yes, livesoft, I can guarantee that this cooler works great with this system. I run it on low and the hard drive never goes above 50C. Noone has been disappointed by it so far. :)

Or you could build your own....put a variable resistor in the usb line to adjust fan speed.
These are my pics just before completion. Can be set down flat (under 1") or raised to 3" or 5". Cost me about $50. Keeps my X9100 and GPU very cool.

Yeah, I'm sure it's a great cooler, let's hope DirectCanada don't take too much time giving me an RMA number :/

I've been thinking about building one myself but I only have one 120mm fan left and I need a 3pin to USB connector then... + a chasis like yours. I'm not a great handyman too. Seems to be a lot of work also :/ But if this is realist, I'll definitly keep that in mind ;)

I just realized that scourge18a on the pictures you posted showing your back panel of your laptop all your vents are covered by that plastic stuff. I took all that stuff off my back panel cause i found it restricted airflow, and i noticed a difference in heat up times decreased and the cool down times increased much faster without those plastic things covering the vents downside though the fan got louder in my notebook oh well. As for your cooler thats a pretty crazy setup! thanx for the share though!

I think that plastic stuff is there to divert airflow to the HDD, it would probably be better to have a lower max HDD temp than a slowly rising one.

I use a NZXT Cyro with mine and the HDD idle temps are around 42-43, load gets it to about 48-50. I've never seen it go above 51 with this cooler.

actually i saw no difference in HDD temp when i took off the plastic stuff vs if i left it on, but i did see a slower gain in heat to the graphics card and a faster gain in cooling when it wasnt under load.

    I bought this:

And my laptop has never been cooler! Under load; GPU temps didn't get above 60C, CPU didn't get above 52C (CPU0 = 46 CPU1=52?), and HDD didn't get above 58C.
Plus the cooler fan doesn't go above 20dB on highest setting.

scourge18a, that is one of the nicest hand built coolers I've seen.

I especially like how the fans can be moved around. (and possibly re-sized) I bet there is a market for customized laptop coolers. I can see the order screen now:

    Select Fan size:
    80mm
    92mm
    120mm

    Select Fan Count
    1
    2
    4
    8
    16

Click here to add to shopping cart.

    Nice work

Actually, seeing those temps scourge18a is rocking, I wouldn't mind paying him to make one for me if I so choose to get the t9800.

But alas, I want to wait and see how it performs to the P9500. Kevin_Jack, how long til you get it? :)

    Thanks everyone
The cooler took me about 2 hours to build, just some screws and soldering some wire. I just like to tinker.
That Cooler is pretty well Link1313. Whats it worth?

Ya, the first thing I did when I got my laptop was take all that crap off, so I really couldn't tell you if there was any temp change in mine. I just didn't think that it could help to have it on, kinda looks like stuff to protect it in shipping from clevo to the reseller. Plus I have a SSD thats good to 70 C, and I'm sure it never gets there. Although I have yet to find any software monitoring that recognizes it.

Hahaha, thanks again. I would definately build one for the person that safely modifies the BIOS so I can OC my X9100......Any takers?

I paid $40 for it. Laptop sits really nicely on it also. I was quite surprised actually usually my purchases don't turn out so well. Definitely a keeper though I am no cooling expert and i'm not sure how it compares to a zalman nc2000.

one thing everyone forgets to mention is the surrounding ambient temperature that plays into a great deal of how well the cooler will perform as well. Most of my tests will never fall below the 78F ambient temp since hawaiis weather never really changes even during winter.

Hi guys, any idea for a cooler that I would be able to keep on my laps / bed, which would be efficient, and available to purchase in Europe :)

I dont recommend using your lap but take a look at the Zalman NC1000 or NC2000.

The thing that reduced the temperature of my HDD a lot was simply installing the Intel Matrix software. I also use a Zalman NC1000 and my HDD idles at 42C-45C, under load can hit 50-55C. Room temps are 25-26C.

Well I ve got a habit of using it in bed...and it would be very difficult not to do it anymore ;D
Ive got the matrix Storage COnsol 8.9 and still the temps are 52-53 celsius, normal use with the highest temp up to 60 celsius.
    Any further advise ?
Im actually thinking about gettin the Antec and placing some cardboard / file underneath it so it can drain air, would it work ?
And how does it cool the other laptop components ?
But the biggest problem for now is the HDD,
    Im using Windows 7 RC,
    THanks,
    Thomas

I for one am pretty disappointed with the Zalman (nc-1000) that everyone has been touting.

I will grant it is quiet, and it lowers temps of the HD from 54 degrees at idle to 44--but it while I was waiting for my zalman's to arrive, I used a piece o crap Belkin I had laying around

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998314

Now, this thing is totally unsuitable for anything but light typing--angle is too great, and the thing is freaking loud--but the Belkin actually reduced the idle temp to 38 degrees.

I expected the Zalman to reach that at least, given the accolades it has received.

I think the NC2000 is the one most talk about, not so much the NC1000. I am not sure if it is any different in terms of air flow but the base is a more suitable size for both 15 and 17'' gaming laptops.

most people have said the nc1000 for the 15 inch 8660 fits just right.

Really, I shouldn't complain about 10 degrees celcius--that's pretty amazing, really. And it is quite.

I was probably more stunned at the Belkin cooling than disappointed in the Zalman

I find that my NP8662 overlaps the NC1000 quite a lot. Many say that the NC2000 fits the 15'' better. I have an NC2000 arriving soon so I will see.

Yea that Antec is not as good as the zalman nc2000 - i used it for 2 years before upgrading and the zalman is vastly superior all round... get off the drugs.

ps the zalman nc 2000 fits fine, my 5792 doesn't overlap it at all, its bigger than my system more sturdy the antec. the antec the power connector is crap too - and the blue LED always invariable fails. its cheap plastic with a thin aluminium covering compared to the zal all metal.

The antec notebook cooler im talking about is the Antec notebook cooler 200 it beats the pants off any zalman 1000 or 2000 when it comes to HDD cooling, and regular cooling in general. It has way better airflow. I owned a zalman and i quickly returned it, it never did anything for my notebook at all. infact NBR did a review on it here. The price isnt 89.99 though http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4642 You always try to find a the right notebook cooler for your notebook, and im sure that the zalman doesnt work well with the sager np8xxx series

Maybe by an accident they've put a SSD inside of a normal HHD ?
