Indeed looks like the GPU itselft is going bad. You can try removing the actual card and reseating it, have new thermal paste to reapply. If that doesnt help a replacement is probably in order.

agree. sadly thats the first signs of a dying graphics card and i have to admit its the first 260gtx ive seen died.

you could try your original supplier but 260 cards are hard to come by now and your best bet might be ebay or NBR marketplace > NBR Marketplace

you could always try the baking method as its helped hundreds of members out on here and given their cards a new lease of life. some have lasted months and others years.

Looks like the video memory on the card is bad. You can try Hutsady's recommendations still. If the GPU is bad, there's not much you can do for it.

Depending on the cost you may just want to look at getting a new machine.

Also a replacement will likely be used and may not last long itself.

why not try the baking method.
all that has happened is the solder contacts on the card are starting to crack. baking it melts these contacts and reconnects them.

    ahh, an oven sure helps.
this video gives an idea of how to replace parts. its for the newer P150EM but is similar inside to the old M860tu/8662 Puget Systems Traverse Pro M550i Component Replacement - YouTube

but sadly you will still need an oven :(

its still a great laptop and mine is still going strong today.
cards you can look for are 9800gt/9800gts/260gtx/280gtx. not sure if theres any others but hopefully someone else can advise.

My M570RU (X9000/8800M GTX) is still going strong, though the GPU has now been baked twice...

the quadra is slower than a 280, but faster than the 260.
all three cards have same power requirements- 75w

I have had all three in my m860etu/ np8662. currently have a 280 in it

You need one of the same size as unlike mxm - a and the mxm ii slots had different mounting hole positions for each size card.

Like I said those chips (9500 gt desktop chips if you are curious) were produced in the wrong size so the heatsink won't fit. There were larger 9700m gt cards which I think is the lowest end physically to fit. If it will work I don't know because we are now getting into obscure combinations from many years ago.

Yes the cards are getting to the age where replacements are going to get exponentially harder to find.

Its the right size and worked with the 17 inch machines of the era, I'm not sure about the 15 inch though.
