Ordered my mobile beast and want to pick up a notebook cooler. Need to know two things:

    1. Is it necessary? I plan to game, game, game.
    2. If it is, which one?

Not sure if the NP8660 is the same build as far as vents go, but I'd sure like to hear from the owners. Thanks in advance!

Notebook coolers are not completely necessary given the good cooling track record of the Sager's but I think they are a very good idea since they could potentially extend the life of your laptop as well as help to keep all of the other components cool, especially if you plan to do a lot of gaming.

I recommend the Zalman ZM-NC2000 Notebook Cooler. I use the Zalman ZM-NC1000 which is slightly smaller.

Its pretty necessary with this laptop, it helps with the noise a lot.

I also recommend the Zalman ZM-NC2000 Notebook Cooler. I own both the 1000 and the 2000 and I find the 2000 a better fit.

WebRender: Why do you prefer the 2000 for a 15" notebook? I thought the 1000 would be a better fit and the 2000 would be better for a 17"+?

That is what I figured as well, so my first purchase was the 1000. It does fit though the NP8660 hangs off the edge ever so slightly. I then happened to try a 2000. The cooler is wider than the 8660 by about a 1/2 inch on both sides and the angle feels better (especially after raising the extendable feet in the back). This is all just my opinion of course but my daily use cooler is now the 2000 for comfort reasons.

Both coolers do the same great job at cooling.

Bought a Zalman 2000 for my 5793 and my gpu temp peaks at about 50c
    after 2 hours of gaming.

    Maybe a cooler doesn't help a lot, but my $1700.00 investment is worth a $60.00 cooler !

Thanks all! So it's the Zalman 2000 eh? Couple questions:

    1. How well does it cool?
    2. How loud does it get, if at all?

Thanks all, you're making this easier for me.

I am very pleased with mine. I haven't measured the improvement in temperatures, but the noise is not an issue, especially since you can turn the fan speed up and down as you please. I can heartily recommend the NC2000, especially for a 17" or larger laptop. My 14" Zepto looks kind of sad on it though :D

Also, you might want to check out some of these reviews.

I'm stubborn and I refuse to use a cooler. If a notebook's cooling solution can't maintain safe operating temperatures on it's own, it's a piece of garbage.

I got the new silverstone 15.4 inch one. Its a rather unknown company (eh, sager ain't as well known as dell ain't it?) but this cooler is rock solid. Its also only 50 bucks. Its extremely heavy and made completely out of metal (shipping wasn't cheap). The are about average with the rest and its made for 15.4 inchers which few coolers are. The high end aluminum coolers are made for 17 inchers so it will be a bit off. Also the angle feels very nice and it has nice fit.

And yes it is necessary, for one it makes typing a lot easier when your on desk and it really is good for the life of your notebook to have a cooler.

Well I tried that Cooler Master and decided to return it and try a Zalman 2000 instead. The CM was way too loud on both medium and high settings and on the low setting the temperature difference was minimal. The volume level was not the only problem, there was a "rattle" or vibration sound when the fan was on medium and high also. Very annoying.
Oh well, I hope the Zalman is better! ;)

You can also use the Zalman as a passive heat sink if you are really bothered about the noise :p

Well hopefully that won't be necessary! I have heard good things about the Zalmans. I decided to try the CM one first, just out of curiosity. ;)

Well I got the Zalman 2000 the other day and while I haven't had a chance to compare it to the CM or without a cooler yet, it seems to be working very well.

One question though... do all of these have a slight *tick tick tick* sound, like the fan is slightly out of balance or something?

aceofspades1217, the only problem with that silverstone... I think... is that the vents are in the wrong spot compared to the vents on the back of the 8662.

This is a notebook, not a laptop. If you dare putting this on your lap, please, think of the children. They deserve a chance too.

lol! Spay or neuter your gamers??

Well I RMA'd my Zalman 2000. The *ticking* sound was getting worse. Hopefully it was just a defective unit and the replacement will be as quiet as everyone elses!

    1. No, but recommended.
    2. I like the NZXT Cryo LX, it does a great job, and it doubles as a USB hub.

Just bought the Zalman 2000 for 8662. It works greats. It is quiet and keeps the unit at least 5 degrees cooler. Still testing.

I don't see anything "new" on the NC1500 over the previous series that would encourage me to wait.

Also, your "opinion" on the Cryo being better built is your personal opinion.

It's available now anyways - no wait required - and it's being sold for less than the 1000 or 2000.

i use the zalman 2000, my laptop runs at 38C idle temp.
I am very please it lowered idle temp by 5-8C idle, and 10-15C when i'm playing games or overclocking.
