Hi,
I'm happy to find a tinkerers brand laptop manufacturer where you can easily modify the system and swap components and of course not pay the Windows tax. I had a few questions about the above model as it seems about what I'm looking for.
RAM:
- What are the module sizes(pin count etc)?
- What is the max frequency it will accept? From looking at the different resellers it seems 1866Mhz.
- Is it possible to get the system without ram? I'm looking to use my existing modules.
DISK:
- The m.2 PCIe samsung claimed speed, is it for real? 1500GB/s write & 2150GB/s read real life speed or theoretical maximums. I understand bottle necks, I'm wondering if I copied a 10GB file from the drive to RAM if it would take 5 seconds.
Monitors:
- How many monitors can be hooked up to this thing?
- Can a 4k TV/monitor be hooked up?
- Can multiple 4k monitors be hooked up?
OS:
- Anyone using this with linux? Any issues with drivers for the hardware? The only two possible issues I see is the nvidia card and the wifi card. Is the NVidia card using optimus which seems to have issues on linux? For wifi I'm assuing I'm better off with Intel.
General:
- Any issues with system stability? I currently have an i7 system that crashes when I do intensive compilations using all the cores.
Resellers:
- I'm in Toronto Canada, it doesn't look like there are any resellers here, or did I miss a thread somewhere?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Windows tax...?
204 pin is standard. What else do you want to know (what does "etc" include here)?
1866 with a desktop CPU is correct. The mobile chips will take 1866 but will more likely run at 1600 (1866 may not be stable with the mobile CPUs). 1600 would be better for this model.
That's up to the reseller. You'll have to ask them individually on their policy on that.
It's a theoretical maximum, as it is with just about all advertised speeds.
2 + internal, as far as I know.
Yes, just remember that it's driven by the Intel HD graphics due to Optimus. Intel HD 4000+ graphics can drive a 4K screen, although DP is better than HDMI.
We haven't tested this nor received any feedback personally. You may be able to, but it will really push the CPU if you can, especially if your workload is heavy.
Can't say as we don't support Linux. Sorry!
Nope, this model performs well and is stable on our end.
Eurocom is in Canada, as is Reflex notebooks. U.S. resellers also ship to Canada.Bullrun likes this. -

The samsung SSD will write and read that fast, but only with large sequential based files, small file speeds will be a lot lower but still competitive with other drives.

Thanks for the responses.
The windows tax is the hidden fee you have to pay when you buy a computer from most retailers which come pre-installed with windows. If you have no interest in using windows and wipe the drive you still paid for the license and there's no longer anyway to get out of it. -

Yes but not clevo/sager you can opt out if you want or use your own license.

Since you're in Toronto, I highly suggest the reseller Eurocom. I've heard lots of great things about them, plus they've been great to me and the shipping literally takes 1 day (at least, from Ottawa to Whitby). I ordered a laptop from them on a Monday, it got here Wednesday. Plus, if you're a student, they have a 10% discount.

Many resellers actually offer Sager computers without Windows by default so you're not paying that tax.
But definitely true with most other brands. -
Hey, I can't find this computer anywhere, not even on your website, or xoticpc.com. I really like the Sager NP8671-S (Clevo P670SE) but suddenly they're pulled from the shelves. Was something wrong with them?

Nothing wrong with them but it was just recently phased out. Several models have been within the last couple weeks. -
That's a shame, that was one I was saving up for. Now I'm having trouble finding a 17" in that price range. Do you know if it will be replaced by anything better?
-
You may want to hang around these forums a little these few days, I do believe the replacements will be announced real soon! (And also gives yourself more time to save up more just in case...)

We have not seen anything official from Sager about a new model to replace this one. But with it having used the 4th gen Core i CPU's and 5th gen have been released as well as 6th gen Desktop with mobile to follow eventually I would think there is going to be a replacement. As soon as any new models become available we will list them up. -
Thanks! I'll keep my eye out!

I'm in Toronto myself, and have bought several laptops from Eurocom. They're in Nepean (just outside Ottawa) so you can usually get your machine within a few days of ordering. They offer student discounts too.
Eurocom still sells the P670SE (as the M7 Pro, just look up their M5 Pro model and choose the 17" screen options).
However they've said they're going to be offering the refreshed Skylake models in a few weeks' time, so I'd probably hold off to see what transpires.Last edited: Sep 1, 2015
