So I bought a notebook cooler for my Sager NP8690, which really helped the GPU, but the CPU is still hot, in fact it seems almost a little hotter than when I last tested it a month ago, and the notebook cooler does almost nothing. Anyway I'm curious about the fan speeds of the system, because my fans won't rev up much until the CPU is at 81 degrees. My brothers NP8690 doesn't even get that hot, then they won't really rev up until 83 - 84. I'd really like to get the fans to go to higher RPMs at around 76 - 78 degrees. Does anyone know what I can do? I flashed the bios. The tests were done with prime95 100% load and HWmonitor. It took about 1 - 2 minutes for one of the CPU cores to hit 80 degrees, which seems incredibly fast, and although I got a lot of air out the exhaust fan, it didn't feel very hot.

I applied new thermal paste a month ago, but the computer still heats up to 80 degrees in 30 ish seconds, which seems absurd

What's your CPU? If it's a quad-core, 80 degrees under prime is pretty normal.

Notebook coolers have less effect because these units already pull in a good amount of air. As long as it doesn't go into the 90's you should be ok.

It's isn't a quad, it's a 620m, my brother owns an identical machine, his doesn't come close to as hot. His CPU has always been cooler, even after reapplying the thermal compound.

Well, if you've flashed to the newest BIOS and you have the same CPU as him, then the only thing I can think of is maybe the paste application wasn't perfect. Either too much, or it spread unevenly.

Yeah, I'm going to reapply the thermal paste, I just think it's odd that the fans don't go to higher RPMs before the machine hits 80 degrees.

A thermal paste reapplication actually fixed everything. I still wonder why Sager doesn't have the fans configured to trigger earlier though.
