I've asked a few people about this before, but does anyone know where I can buy a new CPU heatsink for my Sager NP8690? Mine came scratched and I'm considering replacing it. If anyone can sell me one or find a place that sells them that would be great.

Give your reseller a ring and ask if they can hook you up. I doubt they will but it never hurts to try.

How bad are the scratches? I've got thousands more scratches than your heatsinks on mine from lapping them to a AAA-cup flat goodness. If the "scratches" are more like scrapes where it looks like copper has been gouged out, then yes that is a manufacturing defect covered under warranty. If it is just fingernail scratches or paper-like scratches, then just slap yourself over the head and reapply the paste.

They were pretty bad scratches, but I was mostly able to fix them by using 1000 grit sandpaper. Does changing the thermal compound void your warranty? If not I'll ask Xotic about it.

The heatsink doesn't seem like it should be an issue, but my brother owns an identical laptop to mine and after we both reapplied our CPU thermal compound my CPU temperature still is higher. Mine reaches 84 degrees with Prime95, while my brothers only reaches 79 or possibly 80. I'm really not sure what causes this difference and my only idea is the heatsink because his was unscratched. Anyway, it would be great if I could get my hands on a new one, even if I need to pay for it.

Are your and your brothers laptops EXACTLY the same specs?

No two chips are the same, so yours could just run a little hotter. A four degree difference should be raising no concern, especially when it's so well within the specifications.

Most, who I know, hover within that same range temperatures. You're obsessing over nothing.

Yeah I know that the difference is small. The issue is that over 80 degrees the chips multiplier drops from 23 to 2.8 or 2.9. I know that the actual MHZ drop is only around 20 to 40, but if there is an easy way to decrease my temps to under 80, I wouldn't mind spending a few bucks to do it. Otherwise I'm not really too concerned over it.

If you still have high temps after a fresh application of thermal paste, I think you should just invest in a cooler if you are that concerned. The NZXT Cryo is a good one. Also the temps you see are from stressing and is not a real indication of normal use.

My temps have dropped substantially from my thermal paste reapplication. I don't really want a cooler, since they're bulky and I'd rather save 30 dollars.

Have I voided my warranty by changing my thermal paste? Not that I would take it back or anything, just curious.

No you have not. Clevo retailers give you the freedom to do that : ).

Wow, that's really great. I might try to score a new heatsink off them, but I doubt they'll give me one, and there's no way I'm sending my computer in.

Who said anything about having to send the whole notebook? Just send pictures of the damn heatsink to them and if they give you the green light ship it off.

Crap, I already sanded it... Whatever it's probably not an issue.
