Hey im thinking of getting a laptop for next semester of college. The MSI gx620 is good for me in battery life but i prefer to have a 15 inch laptop to take to lans, lan parties or sometimes to classes if its boring. I think this laptop would be awesome since its quad and a 5870 which will put all the games im playing bad company 2 and cod4 II and css and future Diablo 3. I was wondering i prefer not to drop $250-300 for extended warranty, is it worth to get the extended warranty or are these laptops good and sturdy that it will last me a good 2-3years? on just standard, If its ram and HDD that die fast thatll be fine for me i cna replace those with ease and cheap. But main questions are
GPu 5870 any problems? i7 820qm? and also the backlight on the monitor is it easy to replace and inexpensive?

Check out the MSI GX740. It's a 17" but not much bigger than the NP8690, and weighs less. It has the HD 5870 and i7 options as well.

    Check it out at xoticpc.com

I have never heard of replacing a backlight. That's usually the least of your worries, at least in my experience. Something else goes before the backlight, unless you leave it on 24/7. Warranties are completely up to the individual. I don't buy them any more, but if you're lugging it in your backpack and around to class it might be worth it to get an accidental warranty.

hmm well the gx740 is bigger.. and has a 3 year warranty by msi but
with the sager its less expensive with the i7 820qm compared to the i7 720qm
and the ram on the sager is faster than the gx740 and the resolution is almost the same. I like msi laptops but im tired of them lol i had to send my gx620 twice to the manufacturer. Just wondering if Sager is good build quality and last even longer than manufacturer warranty. I can diagnose laptops and comps myself i know how to open them easily just takes a min. i prefer to have the 820qm i do a little sony vegas and photoshop for css videos.

edit: i barely carry a laptop i just have one when i do go to lans which is usually in the summer once-three times a year, i carry a laptop to class like 1 or twice and the other times i use my iphone as wifi. and i take to friends like 1 or twice too for lan parties so i rarely carry it. I usally have it on for 8-10hrs a day on weekend and weekday i say 5hrs or so. Usually in my experience with comps it dies in the first 3 months if its good after that you have like a 80% of it lasting longer.

Wow, you're right. I'm not sure why the 820QM is so much more in the MSI. You can get that NP8690 decently equipped for under $2k.

It sounds like one of the main things you want to do is gaming, with school on the side of course :). Before I purchased my 8690 I did some research on the i7 720 vs 820 and I couldn't find any benchmarks that actually showed the 820qm having a big performance increase over the 720 in gaming. I haven't had any problems with my 8690 so far, runs Bad company 2 great on full graphics with dx11 @ 1920x1080. The battery life is pretty bad (~1hr) but having good battery life with this kind of performance is too good to be true.

yea cant really see a big difference but i think i prefer 820qm if i get with sager since its only $170 upgrade :) just need to know if anyone have had problems and is 1 year good enough of warranty with them or should i cash out $100 or 150 for 2 year. or get with squartrade and 3 year for $200.

edit: just checked with squaretrade its $169.99 for 3 years.
anyone know if squaretrade is decent with laptop repairs?
with that i can get the laptop with i7 820qm for $1750ish and add another $169.99 for 3 year warranty.

From what I've heard squaretrade is not the best company to deal with.
Clevo's have excellent build quality and I would not worry about something going wrong after 1 year.

I almost forgot, if you use a AMEX when you purchase one they add 1 more year warranty on it.
