The HDMI output on this machine is version 1.4 which theoretically support 4k video at 30Hz. Does this mean I can use the laptop to drive a 4k monitor? Has anyone tested it?
I'd like to know before splashing out to buy an expensive monitor I cannot use.
Thanks.

You should have no problem with a 4K via HDMI out 30Hz. Dont expect to get great gaming performance on that screen at that resolution though, even current GPU's struggle.

HDMI 1.4 will support up to 3840 x 2160 @ up to 30 Hz and 4096 x 2160 @ up to 24 Hz. Expect some extra heat as well as what Hutsady mentioned, though, if you are driving a monitor at that resolution and refresh rate.

The main reason why I am worried is that I hear that on this laptop, the dedicated graphics is wired to the intel graphics card. According to what I've googled so far, ivy bridge would cannot support full 3840 x 2160 on one port.
Thanks for your answers, my confidence is growing -

As far as I know, Intel HD 4000 graphics don't support dual link, so you might be looking at a max resolution of 1920 x 1200 on DVI and HDMI, and perhaps 2560 x 1440 over DP.

Completely slipped my mind about it going through Intel HD 4000.

It's an asus monitor not machine, he is running the sager. The monitor must use MST to combine two outputs on a single panel which is why you can get a 4k monitor by using two inputs as an alternative way of doing it.
However the IGP on the EM series only supports two outputs at one time (unless you have 2 displayport outputs (this model only has one) or use an intel widi (wireless display)) and the 4k monitor is taking both. -

You have DVI (single link), HDMI and displayport outputs with a P150EM so unless you can use wireless display for half the monitor maybe then no.

Ok well it certainly helps stating that when the thread is titled for an entirely different machine
Use the displayport output and the mini displayport output and then the internal one should work as well. -

Not a problem. Just remember to come back and confirm if it works

All outputs of this model run through optimus so are driven from the igp.

The ports are routed directly to the Intel CPU due to the Optimus design. They're never running directly off of the discrete graphics chip.
