I opened up the bottom of my NP9170 while it was turned on (at the time only an mSATA SSD was installed) and noticed that there was a quiet buzzing noise coming from the CPU area. This is when the fans were off and there were no moving parts in the laptop.

What is this buzzing noise from? Is this normal for the NP9170?

These are sounds of switching coils of DC-DC convertors.
Its normal, though some laptops have it less, some more.

Yeah, nothing to worry about. Even if you don't see anything happening, if it's on there is still magic happening in the electronics.

Most likely it is purely electrical. I used to hear a faint, intermittent, high pitch ringing from another system, which was also electrical (desktop power supply). That sort of voltaic cacophony is pretty normal. :)

Yes it's the power circuitry (you can kind of hear the differences depending on load) you can also hear them on the audio line :S

I miss separated audio I/O mini-board on W701. You heard nothing from there.

You don't on the MSI models either, it's just clevo went with a very odd design with the P1x0em systems.
