While I was replacing my wifi card today, I dropped a screw inside the laptop, so now I'm opening it all up to try to find it. In the process, I discovered that what seem to me like cooling elements (the gold-colored blocks) have fallen off their intended locations (the black marks on top of the CPU).

(the full image is at https://i.imgur.com/dCMr2wn.jpg if you can't see the black marks on this image)

So, are they actually cooling elements? (I did order for extra cooling) should I just put them back where they should be? Should I apply new thermal paste? I have some Arctic MX-4, but they are almost 2 years old. Could they still work?

You can press them back into place. You dont want to use any thermal compound under them as that is non adhesive.

You can also remove all these heatsinks, remove the crappy double-sided sticky tape they are attached with from them and use something like Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive for permanent attachment and best thermal conductivity.
