    Few questions on heating

How hot do these laptops run?

Do they recomend an additional laptop cooling system when the laptop is not on the move?

How comfortable is this laptop to be sitting in ones lap, and does this decrease the cooling abilites? As it is much more comfortable to be sitting in my reclining chair watching tv and using my computer.

this is one of the best notebooks for cooling... even though its also the world's fastest.

With this notebook, there are 4 large diameter fans and amazing copper heatpipe system.

Another great feature with this notebook, unlike other gaming notebooks on the market is that Clevo has incorporated a Fan Toggle (Fn+1) to switch all fans to Max Speed or back to Auto Speed... which Clevo has implemented on most of their previous gaming notebooks as well.

In any case, its always a good idea to get a good notebook cooler (like the Zalman ZM-NC1000) to truly eliminate any heat issues. Its not just the cooler that helps, it just guarantees that you are using your notebook on a trusted cool, flat surface, as well as it being on a tilt.

Most gaming notebook owners do not know how to take care of their notebooks... usually they expect it to take care of itself... BIG MISTAKE.

To have a healthy gaming notebook
    You want to
    :
    - make sure you are using it on a clean flat, cool surface (or notebook cooler)
    - make sure to use the Fan Toggle while gaming
    - make sure to monitor the GPU and CPU temps (to watch out for any indications of clogged fans)
    - once every two months, you need clean out the fans and vents thoroughly with a flashlight, Q-tips, and compress air (cans/compressor)

I'm not all that concerned with how warm the computer will make me feel, I am concerned about if this computer is resting on my lap how much will my own body block the air flow, from what i've read and understand the entire back is nothing but vents, but are those intake vents or they out flow vents?

Well, you can actually do that for a certain amount of time before it gets really hot. The air flow block really depends by what you are wearing for your pants, and the temperature of your room. So I'd say if you feel the heat is starting to get very unfavorable. Then move your notebook away and let it cool off.
With the cooling device/pad, you can leave it on your lap for as long as you want.

    1. The 9261 is not a laptop, it is a desktop replacement
    2. It is to heavy, big and clumsy to have in your lap
    3. The system sucks air in from undeneath and blows it out at the back. So yes, by taking it into your lap, you will block the propellors in the bottom plate.

    Questions about heat / fans

-How often does your fan come on when the system is idle (Vista doing nothing but maybe email and internet?)

-How often does your fan come on when gaming, or doing something intense?

    -how quiet is it, really?

-if you respond to this, what CPU and graphics setup are you running?

    Thanks.

All those questions are already answered in many threads and reviews.

    Do these searches:

    D900c Review

    NP9260 Review

    NP9260 Speedfan

    NP9260 Temperature

    NP9260 Keyboard Flex

    NP9260 Notebook Cooler

    etc etc

    Trance
PS: The owners thread is a good place to look for info. Use either NP9260 or D900c to look for further info.

right, there is a comment or two, and questions unasnwered throughout several threads. but nothing consolidated at all, after many hours of reading. there is nothing wrong with a single post to contain the low-down.

    Question still valid.

All questions are answered in other posts. Not in the form of answers of course.

Here is a post of mine I did awhile ago regarding the hot question:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=134808&page=7

Wu Jen also posted his and so did someone else.

    How Quiet?

It is quite quiet with fans on automatic. Unnoticeble in a living room environment.

    Flex?

The Chaz review answers this better then I could ever.

How often do the fans start when gaming?

Hopefully it will never stop rolling. Most people using these laptops put the fans running on full throttle when gaming (first rule when using a gaming laptop). It is not quiet in this mode, but my wife does not complain at all so I guess is not that bad.

By the way, questions are always valid becouse there is no way one can say they are invalid.

    Trance
PS: My experience was gathered when I had mine before it went for repair. It will come back with a Q6600 :)

How does it fit on the Zalman cooler, because I've got one and my X205 does not sit solid on it.

With mine it sits solid (it does not move from there unless someone picks it up, so I guess this is what solid means). Although both the left and the right edges of the laptop are outside the ZALMAN panel boundaries. So is a little bit the front.

    Trance
PS: The important fact is that the "feet" of the laptop should sit straight on the ZALMAN panel, and yes they do!

Thanks for the followup Trance. I never have been a fan of the way info is sprawled out in forums. a Wiki style arrangement would be far better to organize data really. but advantages of a forum are obvious too.

Anyway, I am a long time Sager user. But traditionally Clevo has not been the best by way of cooling, etc. It's sounding like the 9261 might be promising.

I have an 8890, the grandfather of the power systems it seems. I believe its innards are the same as the original Area 51 laptop when those first got popular - and overpriced. I bought my hot new Sager 8890 that rivaled those stupid things for half the cost. I still use it today. It's loud and as for cooling can't hardly handle the max CPU it was designed for.

Then there's my 4380; also loud, and the fan is running constantly with the OS at idle. Annoying.

Finally, I've got a friend with the predicessor to the 9260. Also loud, like a freaking turbine, and fans always on when not under significant load.

Each of these systems is at least a year or two apart. Progressively louder and crappier with regards to cooling (granted, more and more powerful cpu's). So It's been a while, and I figured I'd check into the situation today. Have they finally figured it out and built it right? Or is it the same 'ol less than stellar cooling?

It sounds like cooling has improved. very cool. :) (overloaded term)

My next purchase will ideally be something that is silent at idle, fans occassionally, or hardly audible. While gaming i expect more noise, but even still hopefully not like a dang turbine. :)

    Slayer,

I can say that at idle, only if I put my ears over the lappy I can hear the airflow. At normal operation the fans do kick in on and off, but I can say that at work is unnoticeble so is in the living room (my Tablet PC is louder), as for gaming it loud but not loud enough to upset my wife so it is fine.

Use the Fan Toggle (Fn+1) to switch all fans to a constant Max Speed or to Auto Speed.

When at Max Speed, you get a constant airflow, as well as a constant sound (which is nowhere annoying).

Very good news you guys. I'm hoping to get my company to buy me one of these, but dont want to shock people with a turbine blast on the occassion I need to bring this into conference meetings, etc. We have a need to do things with multi-core and dx10, and I just dont wanna have to go with a dell or some dumb thing.

So yes, the comments about it working well in the office environment as well as even the full fan not being annoying... thats great.
