Sager NP9262 & SLi nVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX Status

Most if not all bugs have been identified and isolated with fixes that are working with the beta version of the drivers. We are now just waiting on a final build of the driver with MS WHQL approval, then it will be ready to be released from the Clevo factory.

Sager expects to start shipping our NP9262 w/nVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX to customers on the week of March 24, 2008.

    Pre-orders will start today.

dexgo, Sager does not "placate" people...they tell the truth as best they know it.

Notice that it requires Microsoft WHQL approval, so that is not under Sager's control and could delay the release, but at this point Sager is using their best information and judgment when they say they EXPECT "to start shipping our NP9262 w/nVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX to customers on the week of March 24, 2008".

The fact that they have now re-opened pre-ordering for it is a good clue that they are fairly confident that they will be able to meet their target.

Others who are telling their customers that they "hope" to begin shipping sooner than that are the ones who are "placating" their customers.

That they did, but to my knowledge, they never stated any of the definite facts on which those earlier estimates were based whereas here they have stated the facts that give them reason to believe the drivers can be released around about the 24th of March, and the only contingency to that release is getting certification from MS, not any contingency related to whether or not their engineers and coders will be able to complete the drivers in time to meet the release estimate.

That does not mean that it isn't possible that there will be further delays, or that any such delays won't be on account of the need to do further work on the drivers; however, it should give the rest of us more confidence in the estimated release date because the real contingency - how long it would take the engineers & coders to work things out - has been minimized.

As we all know, some of us to their lasting discontent, Clevo/Sager are very conservative when it comes to making factual statements (as opposed to merely releasing solely an estimated date without any of the facts supposedly justifying that estimate) - just recall their reticence in officially stating that the D901C supported quad-cores.

Sager/Clevo systems aren't for shiny, happy people, but for experimentalists, and while playing in that sandbox brings with it the pleasure of (usually) having the best notebook tech around, bar none, it also brings with it an increased risk of failure, i.e., that someone else (e.g., D'h'ell) will get something coveted out first. In this case, D'h'ell appears to have gotten 8800M in SLi out first, but that victory is the exception that "proves" the rule - the rule being that Sager/Clevo generally get the bleeding edge stuff out first.

On top of that, Sager/Clevo, when they finally do decide to make a public statement, have been unusually blunt and honest with us as compared to the norm in the IT industry, so if they're better than most at admitting when they've failed, we can probably have more confidence in them when they make a statement claiming that they've succeeded.

But, that's just my 1.5 cents' worth (used to be 2 cents, until the Bernanke inflation).

It is? Be careful about turning a "maybe" into a "must." Sager/Clevo have tried harder than most to manage expectations, don't upset that by getting hopes up higher than is reasonable.
