    Hello

Finally i almost have ready my final configuration (for now) for buy my laptop.

    Intel Core 2 QUAD Q6600 2.4GHz w/ 8MB L2 Cache - 1066MHz FSB
    512MB PCI-Express nVidia GeForce 9800M GT DDR3 DX10
    4,096MB DDR2 800 (2 SODIMMS) Dual Channel Memory

but i can decide for my hard drive beacuse i dont know much about it.
    the option are:

    ~ 160GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA 150)
    ~ 250GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA 150) ( + 30 )
    ~ 100GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA 150) ( + 35 )
    ~ 320GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 8MB Cache) ( + 60 )
    ~ 200GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache) ( + 65 )
    ~ 320GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache) ( + 140 )

i was thinking about "200GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)", because is SERIAL ATA II (new tecnology) but
somebody tell me: "320gb 5400rpm is just as fast as 200gb 7200rpm due to higher platter density". What is platter density, is 5400rpm fast as 7200rpm really?

Please help me with your recommendation, if i can save US$30 or US$60 is very nice because with this laptop i will be broke!!!

    thank!!!

it really depends what HD they are using for the 200 GB @ 7200. If it is a toshiba, lol the 320 GB is the way to go. However, if that a hitachi 7K200, the 200 GB is definitely worth the money.

Which drives do Xotic and Powernotebooks use? I was going to get the 200GB 7200RPM.

if you can afford it though, go for the 320gb 7200rpm. it uses the same (or close to) amount of energy as the 5400rpm and about the same abount of noise, yet more responsive.

i will try explain the environment. I make a lot Video Editing (so, Intel Core 2 QUAD Q6600 2.4GHz), this is the most important. I like play heavy games too(UTIII, quake4,...) but i dont need (and can´t paid) a 9800GTX with SLI, and i dont have much time for play (i have job) so 9800GT is ok for me.

I REALLY HAVE THE SAND CLOCK. I am a very demanding user, i like do click and woala!!!! my application must be ready in 0.0000001 sec.

so, is speed difference between 320GB 5400rpm HD and 200GB 7200rpm is small (1-3sec data transfer) i will buy 320GB 5400rpm. But if 5400rpm HD is very slow (my application will delay) i better buy 7200rpm. please help me to decide. (I can´t paid Solids and 320GB 7200rpm :( )

it was actuall found that the 320gb 5400rpm and 200gb 7200rpm were pretty much the same performance wise. If this was the only choice, i would advise the 320gb drive since you get more hard drive space.

If you are a demanding user, i would suggest getting the 320gb 7200rpm drive. It may be more expensive, but with it, you get the good of both worlds.
The multiple segments of a 320gb to help seek times,
and a 7200rpm drive to speed up searches.

    Thank you Helios.
    Only one thing more:

    between
    320GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 8MB Cache)
    200GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

is better 320GB 5400RPM beacuse the performance is same but is more space right. is important the CACHE??

    320GB 5400RPM has only 8MB and 200GB 7200RPM has 16MB
Cache really affect the performance and speed?

Cache is not that important, most people would not even notice any performance differences.

the bang for the buck is definitely the new 320GB 5400rpm.

yes, cache is sorta important, but other NBR people here did all of their tests (dont ask me what they did) but they found that the 320gb 5400rpm 8mb cach drive, performed about the same as the 200gb 7200rpm 16mb cache drive.

the results speak for themselves. between those two, i would go for the 320gb.
