So on on Friday March 21 I ordered my new system (stats in Sig). I was called and informed that they were out of the 1680x1050 Matte Finish, but just got in new Super Glossy screens at the same resolution. So I switched to the new screen.
So anyone who may want the glossy screen but the lower resolution give Sager a call.

Additionally, my laptop has shipped (to arrive April 1st, no joke) with dual 8800M GTX video cards.

I am doing a couple of odd things when it arrives. I am replacing the default HD with a Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00 7200RPM HD (on of the fastest laptop drives). This will be my storage drive.

I also purchased 2 CF to SATA HD adapters along with 2 RiData 16GB CF cards rated at 233x speed (Read 30MB/s Write 17MB/s each tested by me). I will place the two CF cards in RAID 0 (to get 60MB/s read and 35MB/s write, Solid state does almost perfectly double when using RAID 0 unlike standard hard drives) and install my OS of Windows Server 2008 64 bit.

If anyone is interested in know how my machine performs, let me know what you want to see and I will try to post some benchmarks.

Feel free to post benchmarks. I am curious how much improvement is by using those compact flash instead of the notmal hdd.

$70 or so for each CF card, and another $40 or so for each adapter, total cost = $220 for a rough equivalent of a 32 GB SSD.

Might be less as I'm not sure if he needed to buy a 2.5 bay for the adapter.

I think ones around that price have slower read/write speeds than what hes getting.

The reason for the two CF cards is that for ~$220 I got a 32GB SSD with 60MB read and 35MB write.

For a reall 32GB SSD with those specs you need to spend $569 at newegg. (there are cheaper 32GB SSD's, but they have ~26MB read, ~8MB write which is much too slow to be useful).

I am excited to see if this works as it should and will let you guys know.

Are you going to need the 2.5'' frame for the adapter?

I bought the frames, but will let you know if it was really necessary once the laptop arrives. I travel so I wanted to make sure thing stayed secure while moving the laptop around.

    Hello,
The idea of using high speed CF cards is a very good one. I am going to get a D901C soon (1-2-3 weeks) and I am thinking that it would be great two use 2 x 16 G cards in RAID set up for perfrmance with windows installed on them. 2x 32 G would be enough to have also the program files on the same partions. I am not sure what is the speed of the 7200 rpm notebook hdd, but if CF cards in performance RAID mode is faster I will consider adding to my laptop 2 CF cards for windws and orgram files. Does anyone know what is the average speed of the 7200 rpm hdds?

    lol, with 2 5400rpm 250's I had 120/120 mb/s read/write in RAID 0.

Ok that is good compered to the 60 MB/s read and 30 Mb/s write. So for the moment I will just stay with the 200 GB 7200 rpm hdd that I get.

    MB or Mb?

    @ OP
I can't wait to find out if this works. It appears to have quite a bit of potential.

Dexgo, yeah, MB or Mb. Also, I am assuming you are using the Max numbers and not the average? Additionaly what program are you using to test write? I have been using HD Tune Pro (15 day eval) but it needs to be able to destroy all the data on the HD to test the Write speeds.

I have a server class machine with three WD 7200 RPM drives in RAID 0 and I only get (all in MB):
    Read: Min: 70.6, Max 112.8, AVG: 93.1, Access 13.x

A SINGLE one of those drives gets (all in MB):
    Read: Min: 24.6, Max 69.6, Avg 51.2, Access 21.x

So Dexgo's two 5400 RPM drives in RAID 0 seem to be doing illogically better.

I can't get the write scores because it would destroy my data and I need that data ;)

As a side note, the CF cards have a Access time of 0.1 and the Min and Max times are less then 1MB different unlike mechanical drives.

I will post my CF raid numbers (as well as performance feeling) as soon as I can (although my father in law comes in this week so it may not be until the weekend).

By the way, did you get this idea from Kevin's thread here?

If I remember correctly, he didn't RAID 0 his cards though.

    ATTO disk benchmark ...

    it's for RAID.

Benchmarking only. specifically. Alot of those programs can't deal with RAID properly.

this program is the one you use.

    this was my first test with a 320 5400 and a 250 5400.

    it's MB.

My further tests and setups with this benchmark tool WHICH IS MEANT FOR TESTING RAID. leads me to get 120//

Thanks. I will give this tool a try when benchmarking my CF SSD.
