    Hello Forum,

My system is a custom build and I'm having trouble with heat trying to run Prime95. Prime95 runs for only 10 minutes before my temp reaches unsafe levels (over 80c) before I stop the application. I am able to run video benchmarks with no problem and games with no problem. While using CAD or video editing, I have no heat problems. The ONLY heat problem occurs while trying to run Prime95 on any setting while the system is at 100% load. I also have a Zalman laptop cooler w/ fans running on high when trying to run Prime95, but the system still reaches temps 80c plus after only 10 minutes. What is the solution????

I am looking to upgrade my memory to 24gb, replace the hard drives, and video card to Nvidia Geforce 680m.

    Here are my current specs:

    Windows 8 pro 64-bit
    i7 980x CPU
    Nvidia GeForce 285m
    12gb RAM
Was running RAID 5 (3x500 7200 RPM Serial ATA II 300 16mb cache) before losing a hard drive - now running RAID 0 with same hard specs with two hard drive until newly purchased drive arrive.

simple solution...dont run prime. as long as you are not hitting 90c or over you are fine.
im no expert but two things with the great 900F is i dont think it will take 24gb ram and it defo wont take a 680. a 5+ year old laptop just wont take todays architecture (unless one of the experts wants to slap me round the chops with a wet fish and prove me wrong).

great post from 2008 which still holds strong today
    edit

forgot to ask. when was the last time you cleaned the fans and vents out with compressed air and when was the last time you changed the thermal paste on the cpu/gpu and which thermal compound did you use.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, the NP9280 can run 24gb RAM. I have viewed a few of these systems myself. Also, you can purchase a the 680M Nvidia and heatsink kit from EuroCom. They both work fine. You are correct about not running Prime95, but not running certainly doesn't address why my heat reaches over 80c after 10 minutes of 100% load. Using Prime95 only exposed the problem. Can anyone address possible solutions to this overheating problem? Thanks!

mine hits over 90c with prime. even higher with intel extreme tuning.
80c is a very good temperature when its pushed to the max so nothing to worry about.

what temps are you getting while gaming or using your most powerful application.

    Thanks for you marks.

When I run games I don't go over 70c. In fact, I hover around 60 to 65c. When running CAD and CS6 together, I don't go over 70c. What temp is in the danger zone before I do damage? I thought that number was above 85c? I'm sure the system will shutdown before it hit the extreme danger zone or I hope so. While running Prime 95, when CoreTemp starts flashing when temps hit 80c to 82c is when I shut down Prime95.

80C is fine even with a prime loaded desktop with the older CPUs lol.

over 90c it will start throtling and think its 100 it will shut down to protect hardware.

i get the same as you wile gaming.70-72c and max 75c but in the 80c on 3 of my 4 cores.

What system are you running and specs? You are using Intel Extreme Turning - what did you OC your CPU to?

Aye, Prime95 will undoubtedly push those temps, but as others have said, your readings are not only stable/normal, but rather good.
