I have a Sager NP9280/D900F. It has a GTX 285M card in it right now. Can I upgrade it at all to a Quadro (switch out the card, switch the driver - whatever works)? I do 3D modeling / CAD / BIM / rendering / animation / game modding etc.

You need to make sure the form (MXM) of the card is the proper one before you buy. Usually the seller can tell you that.

GTX 285m only came as mxm 3.0 type B I believe.
Possible that a Quadro FX 3800m would work, even better would be the latest Quadro 5000m.
Both beat the 285m.
The heatsink should fit the 3800m (pretty much the same as a 285m just higher clocks). Don't know about the 5000m. -

the 3800m apparently has 100w TDP so that will be interesting. 5000m isnt out yet AFAIK
D900f is MXM 3.0 yes. Here you go, great seller & unbeatable deal!! http://item.ebay.com/260665995804 -

That's a nice deal right there, you will probably make more than $250 by selling your old 285m.
