My 5 year old NP9570 was a making a bit of fan noise so I popped the battery out unscrewed the fans and cleaned the dust off of them, like I'd done a dozen times before.

When I plugged it back in, it powered itself on, lights came on for about 2 or 3 seconds and then it shut itself down for a second and then powered up again. Like it started for a few seconds and then rebooted. After it does that, the screen is black and it won't boot, neither on screen or to an external monitor.

I yanked and reseated all the ram sticks to rule that out first.

I powered it on with the back open and noticed the main CPU fan kicks on for about a half of a rotation and then doesn't spin. The secondary CPU fan (over the ram sticks) runs. The fan over my single GPU runs intermittently.

My question is, if my fan over the CPU heatsink crapped out, would that cause the failed boot? I read that certain mother boards might do a safety check of the fan RPMs if it's not getting feedback it won't fire up the CPU, although I can't find anywhere that specifically states that with the NP9570. I did try to swap the GPU and CPU fan to test the theory, but got the same power cycle to black screen.

If it's not the fan, what else could possibly cause that to happen? Has anyone experienced this?

    Some thoughts:
    - Make sure that all fans are connected.
    - Reseat the BIOS. (what BIOS you are using?)
    - Reseat the RAM's, removing all RAM's, turn on, then use only one,
    - Reseat the CPU
If the CPU fan has issue, in my knowledge the system will not boot.

The fan doing a half spin on power up is normal. Even if the fan is not present the system will still boot.

The startup scenario you describe sounds like it is failing to detect the GPU. Reseat your graphics card. When it detects the GPU again it will do the same initial boot to black screen for a few seconds, then power itself off, and then back on again. When it powers back on it should display an image.

Thanks for the replies. I opened it back up and popped out the GPU, wipe the connections down and blew it off. For whatever reason, that was the issue. I put it back together and it booted right up. Thanks so much for the help. I'm beyond relieved.

It could be you introduced static when working on it and pulling the cards helped discharge them. Be sure to keep yourself grounded while working on it.
