    Hey all,

I'd been looking at getting a new laptop for a little while now and I have had my eye on the Thinkpad P70 coming out soon-ish but then I just found out about the Sager NP9758-S / Clevo P750DN. Seems like a pretty cool idea. I don't travel very much, outside of taking my computer to and from work every day. I drive, so it's not that much of a hassle to carry a large laptop around.

I was curious about the build quality of these machines. Things like keyboard feel, sqeakiness, hinge strength, DOA, things like that.

I'd definitely be getting the 4K display; does anyone have experience with it?

I couldn't find much resources on these laptops, although I did read through a few forums on this site (and others), the opinions varied a bit.

It would be used mostly as a workstation (I do tons of analysis, virtual machines, etc and my work very often ends up being CPU-bound), but being able to game fluently would be nice in my off time.

For battery life, are we talking minutes or roughly an hour? I don't care terribly much about battery life, but I would like to know roughly what I'd be getting (knowing full well it won't be much).

    Thanks for any feedback!

Battery life you should be looking around 2 hours unless you start running multiple monitors with high intensive graphics it would go below that. But for general use probably 2 hours would be a safe estimate.

I think the build quality is pretty nice on those, i checked one out in production the other day and it felt pretty nice, good strong hinge, had just a little keyboard flex to it, but overall i thought it felt like a really solid machine.

The more I look into it, the more I'm tempted by it. The dimensions were originally something I was wary of, however it looks like the computer is extremely close to the size of the Dell Latitude I'm currently using.

Are there some impressions on the 4K display currently being offered on this computer? The information I saw seems to be for an IGZO panel that I don't think is offered anymore (because it was glossy and the new ones seem to be matte). I'd like to see some specs/reviews of the current 4K display if there are any.

    Thanks!

I have the p750DM with 4K. I feel the build quality is very good. It's really sturdy. It's not brushed metal/aluminum MacBook like materials or anything like that as its all plastic, but I really have no issues with the build quality. Keyboard with minimal flex if any.

As far as the screen, see the link below to HTWingnut's review where he talks about it and has some objective evaluation. Personally, like in his review, in mine there is some backlight bleed noticeable near the corners but only when on black screen or background. Otherwise, screen is good as well, though it may not be as good as the recent Alienware 15's 4K screen a while back (before the recent Skylake revisions) which I read some reviews on. So this may not be THE best available 15.6 inch 4K screen, so keep in mind if you are going to be doing photo or video work. I believe this is a PLS panel and is pentile display, but some of the reps Sager reseller reps may have more details.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the laptop so far. Hope this helps.

Overall, the reviews I have seen have been mostly positive. And if you are looking for a mobile work station, you really can't get better than the desktop processor options in this model. I don't think I have seen anybody that said the screen was horrible by any means. Maybe not perfect, but pretty good.

One other quick question; bordering on nitpicking.

Is it possible to change the backlight color outside of Windows? I generally do not use Windows, but I wouldn't want the keyboard backlight to be the rainbow color I see in almost all reviews and photos.

    Thanks!

I don't think there are hardware controls for the keyboard lights, only software (flexikey). I don't believe there is a Linux version of this software.

Nope, all done within the OS via software.

I have a quick question building on this thread. I noticed the P750DM and P750DM-G both have the usb 3.1 option. Some of the advertisements say Thunderbolt 3 in addition to usb 3.1. For example see the graphic difference between link 1 and 2 below. Link 1 is Xotic PC and does not say Thunderbolt 3 above usb 3.1. Link 2 is Sager Laptops and does say Thunderbolt 3.

Is this simply just an advertisement needing to be updated on Xotic's part? Were they waiting for the Thunderbolt 3 certification to go through or something?

I haven't been able to confirm this just yet, but so far it seems that Thunderbolt 3 protocol/speeds are not supported (sorry, no 40 Gb/s). Still trying to source something official on this, or at least confirm one way or the other via testing somehow.

Xotic is selling a Sager. Sager is shipping a Clevo. Clevo says...

Sager can choose from a variety of options from Clevo, we will have to see once it can be confirmed 100%.

Well, I went ahead and purchased a NP9758. It has the Sharp IGZO 4K screen in it (speced from Eurocom). I like the specs of that vs the Samsung display that it seems is more common in other versions. I'm feeling pretty excited!

Well I ordered it last night, Eurocom stated that it'll probably take 2-3 days to ship out and I paid for FedEx Express (so another 1-3 days after that). I'm hoping I get it by the end of next week, but we'll see.

Pretty excited. This Latitude I'm using now just isn't cutting it anymore... lol.

    keep in mind you won't have g-sync. 4k sharp doesn't support g-sync

Yeah, I know. I appreciate the heads up; but most of my usage will be workstation tasks with the occasional gaming thrown in. I figured I'd be happier with the (seemingly) higher quality display than the smoother gaming experience. I did consider the other options for a while.

Of course, my use case probably isn't very common for a computer like this.

It has a broad appeal so while more niche there are a fair few workstation type users.

Anyone able to figure this out? I just called Sager but the guy was somewhat of a prick. He said there were 100's of them shipped and nobody has complained yet. I told him xoticpc says it does not have Thunderbolt and he got kind of mad saying we are not xoticpc.

Still trying to figure out if this Thunderbolt 3 is certified or not.
