Please help as I have a P8700dm-G with 2x 980m in SLI.. Which I paid over 5 grand for with the 2x 1tb M.2s and a 2tb SSD which at the time was 2000 worth of upgrades for the drives..
I purchased this laptop
1. due to the research, was CPU overclockable in bios..NOPE only if i would have grabbed it from a reseller that installs a unlocked Prema bios..
2. as a upgradeable on the GFX cards... NOPE.. The damn pascal cards need more power and the damn motherboard doesn't have the extra power output for them..
3. so when the pascal cards came out i would have had to buy 80 of the laptop over with same Z170 board, 6600k cpu and basically same memory to get a gpu upgrade...seeing how im still rocking a 5ghz OC'd ivy bridge i7 4960x 6core with a 1080ti and my 2014 cpu in my desktop still rocks...WHAT a Fool i was...
Is there any 1070 that can be installed that won't take out my gsync?
or do i just have to find me a desktop 980 to throw in due to **** SLI support especially on UWP games...
I basically spent 300 more on build for the SLI vs 980 desktop to get a awesome 3dmark score and good for nothing else

The P870DM-G can be upgraded to the i7 8700k but I dont know if Prema BIOS is required for that functionality.
Also I have seen prominent members using a single GTX 1080 in that machine. Needs a hardware mod to supply the power from the motherboard to the GPU, I am not directly knowledgeable of this but there are plenty who are here.

It's not Sager's fault, its the hardware manufacturer Clevo. They are who decided not to make any GPU boards in the old MXM 3.0b rectangle.
BIOS mods are around other than Prema's for the P70DM to use kabylake (easy) and coffeelake (hard) CPUs. The 1080 with its hardware slot wiring mods is even more work, but at least MrFox showed it was possible.
If your CPU is 6600K or 6700K, it should be overclockable on stock BIOS (or using windows applications like Throttlestop or XTU) by changing multiplier. You'll be missing many settings required to do more than a moderate OC (like setting static voltage, turning RSR off, increasing power and current limits)
P870DM owners mostly decided best way to get a GPU upgrade was sell the DM and buy DM3. You'd be transferring your SSDs and memory across if you went that way and recouping the price of the DM, so it's not like you'd be chucking the whole 5 grand worth away. 980M's are still worth a lot more as they go into pretty much any other laptop, whereas a 980 is basically specific to the P870DM -

It was a cost decision, the cost of designing the PCB for the 1060 and 1070 a 2nd time would have been expensive for the upgrade market.
Remember no reference design from nvidia so all the cost is on the designer now. -

Clevo never advertises them as upgradable. Using desktop parts makes repairs easier and gives higher performing options within the generation.

Nowhere in this article could I find any mention of LGA vs BGA which until now was my understanding of true notebook and true turdbook; turdbook being a notebook you buy as is, poor design and all. The real differentiation is capability for modding, not upgrading. Unless a customer is adept at modding/hacking, notebooks such as the P870 carry a substantial risk of failure.
@Charles P. Jefferies conclusion - “Our notebook buying advice is to embrace a little “Apple Store logic” and buy your notebook with the configuration you need for its lifetime.” Funny thing is configuring the P870TM1-G in such a way pushes the cost well past a pre-built desktop PC i would humbly bow down to. -

Notebooks always have a premium over desktop, even pre-built ones. You get the complete warranty still and the form factor demands an increase.
