I am looking for a DC PSU for my sager np9150. I found a Auto charger from pro star and the sagernotebook sites, but they are both only showing the max wattage for this model at 120w. I know the AC PSU is a 180w PSU for my model and I can't see a 120w holding out.
Specification for charger: "DC Input: 11 ~ 16Vdc, Fuse Rating: 15A / 125V, DC Output: 16 ~ 24V, 6A, 120W Max., 4ft Output Cable, Dimensions: 4.5" (W) x 2.17" (L) x 1.33" (D)"
The laptop power requirements are as follows:
"Full Range AC-in 100~240V, 50~60Hz, 180W AC Adapter, DC output 19V, 9.47A"
So if the laptop need DC output of 19v, 9.47A and the auto convert only outputs 16-24v, 6A, 120w max.... isn't this going to be an issue for my laptop?
If my math is correct I am looking at 9 amps at 19v, that would be more like 330w at 12v.

You can get an inverter that will do up to 300w. You would have to still carry the AC Adapter to plug into that but it will be plenty of power.

Just make sure your car socket it ok with that

How would I Test my cars plug ensuring that it could handle the inverter without any issues? Are you talking about the internal wiring melting because of the load? Or it not having enough power to actually power the inverter through the plug?

The battery is designed for short bursts of rapid energy to start the motor and you want to start drawing 180W through the lighter plug, so it's probably good the careful.
-
Would it be better if I applied it directly to the battery?

Just check the plug is capable of delivering what you want to draw is all I am saying.

The usual car plugs can handle something like 16A, sometimes 20A. With the usual 14V of a car (not 12V, it is a bit more), that would give you a maximum of 280W. If you need more power, you have to install special cables from the battery.
-
So do you think a continuous 300w inverter will work even if there is only 280w coming out?
-
Maybe, but it also depends what you want to do. The power supply of the notebooks delivers enough power for it to run at maximum power (incl. the GPU), and still have some power left to charge the battery. Do you want to game in the car, or is it just to charge the battery? Charging the battery doesn't take that much power, the power supply only takes enough power from its supply to deliver enough power for what the notebook is asking.

It is possible to run the laptop with 120W and certainly to charge it. I had to do it a couple of weeks ago when I left my PSU behind. You would have problems if you run something that uses more power like games.
Sager Np9150 Car Charger 12vdc to 19vdc. Why do all the resellers only show 120w max for charger?
