So I've owned Dell and HP laptops in the past, and I do plenty of reading and homework before purchasing them. However, despite great initial impressions, the love affairs on all my laptops quickly soured after a year. I've even had an HP case manager tell me it was reasonable to replace a computer once a year (I sued and got my money back).
Anyhow! I've recently stumbled upon Sager/Clevo products and I am extremely pleased that many of the resellers allow me to pick components, even leave out components I don't need as if I was building my own computer.
How is the quality of Sager builds? I'm a college student, and dropping $1k a year on a laptop isn't very practical at all. I expect its not going to be as solid as a Macbook Pro (overpriced, but the quality feels like the thing will last). I've got my eyes on the NP5160 and I'm about ready to pull the trigger, its just that I've never seen any Sager's out in the wild, and right now quality is the thing I'm most concerned about since I've had such bad luck with laptops in the past. Thanks!

I wouldn't give a doubt about the build quality..
These things are built like tanks.. -
The quality on these laptops are phenomenal and like Meraki1990 said ... they're built like tanks.
Assuming you're in a smoke free (or not too smoky), environment and you keep your laptop clean (air-duster) and you handle it with care a Sager should last you until you deem it slow 3-4 years down the line.
As far as seeing Sager's in the wild, they're well camouflaged, and only attack high performance prey. -
Well that certainly puts much of my anxiety to rest. Perhaps I will give Sager a little bit of faith, I really hope the build quality stays relevant as long, or longer as the performance; my Desktop's Q6600 still feels relevant today, I have no doubts the 2630QM will be able to keep me happy for at least 3 years, I just need the build quality to last that long as well

Currently I'm working on the Sager NP5792 (silver trim), it'll turn 3 years old in March. It's still running strong. I will probably upgrade sometime this year as i like to have as much eye candy as possible.
-
My head is spinning that I can even get a 1080P screen as a $65 upgrade.
Must...sell...current...laptop -
2 years, no issues and running strong !
-
2.5 years and m860tu is still the dogz dangley bits.
built to last and the best laptop ive ever owned.
best $2,600 ive ever spent. -
make sure you read the Clevo guide if you haven't already - great resource
i'm running an 8760 for a couple months and i really like it. i bought the bare-bones model from R&J Tech and then bought the components elsewhere. this gave me a chance to see the guts of the thing when i slapped it together and i like what i saw. these machines are not the typical mainstream junk.
having said that, i do have a few dislikes with the 8760...
it doesn't have a keyboard light - would be nice if keyboard had a backlight
the space bar is goofy - if i tap the long edge nearest me, it won't always register
the touchpad feels nice, and it's a nice size, but it isn't nearly sensitive enough. the driver is pretty crappy i think. also a very noticeable response lag when moving the pointer. i don't use it anyway, but if i had to use it i'd be looking for a better driver
keep in mind these are 8760 specific complaints and none are show-stoppers. i'd absolutely buy the same machine again -
I have Clevo 570RU/Sager NP5793 and it's 3 years and going strong. Does not feel slow as I bought it with a 8800m gtx at the time. Only reason to get something new would be my lust after the latest GPU hardware.
I can second its like a tank. Actually mine looks like the day I pulled off the wrapping. -
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to sell off this HP and get myself a real computer.

yup, my 'tank' is still going strong even after the dog pulled it off the dinner table by the power cord while open and turned on...2 years ago...

My Sager laptop is about 1 year old and it can easily pass as brand new. You have absolutely no worries about build quality or anything else. These laptops are a work of art and you can tell a lot of love and obsession has gone into their build. Just take a look at the cooling design and the layout on the inside and you will see what I mean.

My new sager NP5135's build quality is inferior than my previous HP HDX16T.

==========================
when I disassembled my w860cu and saw the truth ,
I know why CLEVO only offer a 1year warranty in China .
no necessary 3 year or some strange people go to your home and treat you AW laptop just like treating a rubbish by violence .
Very STRONG build quality in CLEVO factory , I'm in CHINA I know what they do in the computer design.
to reduce 1db electricity noise come from the motherboard ,
CLEVO built a professional LAB worth million $ .
far away from dell or hp , you'll know What's CLEVO better.
think what m11x r2 's screen axis happened ?
so they needs more fees about repair , on the pretext of "for accident".
I must upload some picture for you but this bbs's attachments not working right with firefox .
Just wait for me. -
If it wasn't for the new SandyBridge models being cheaper and better, my NP8690 that I just recently sold would've hit the 2 year mark, and still looks brand new.
There is no doubt that Sager/Clevo gets the most out of your money. -
the Optimus physical switch doesn't stay flush with the chassis. I need to push very hard to actually activate the button.
the keyboard is not flat but wavy. Left part of the keyboard is higher than right side.
these are minor problems. But I do not consider this as good build quality. -
-
also if keyboard is not flush then you need to contack your supplier as that is what warranty is for.
now theres a blast from the past. havnt heard from him in 2 years. he must have been abducted by alienware due to his ongoing thread.
-
I do know how Optimus work and what I was talking about does not relate to manually switching Optimus. It's about the physical button and the body frame.
I of course do know warranty. But I can't afford to not having a laptop for a few weeks unlike u guys having multiple computers at home. -
I agree that Sagers are built like tanks! My NP5793's chassis and body is still going strong with no sign of any wear etc.
But I'm not too sure about the components inside!
I'd say that the chassis will outlive the components inside!
