Hi,
Well, I am a UK resident, and too struggled to find a UK supplier for the D901C (NP9262)
So Upon careful research I chose to buy mine from XoticPC.com in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Unfortunately you will have to wire transfer the money to them, which can be a little un-nerving at first, but so far they have been very patient with me (I ask Justin a lot of questions on Live Support!) and are friendly to deal with.
Considering you are in the same boat as me so to speak, you have probably found that RockDirect.com does not supply the notebook your looking for......
But I found a UK company that does sell the D901C (about a month after I had ordered mine) - www.dpctech.net
I didn't know at the time whether to be sad or happy that there is a UK supplier for these machines, because although Xotic are cheaper than DPCtech - DPCtech are based in the UK, therefore (heaven forbid!) should anything go wrong with my machine - I will have saved no money because of courier fees back to the USA for repair vs. UK postage costs.
Regards

i dont mind having to pay with a wire transfer as i would have if i got the other laptop im thinking about the M9750, thanx for the DPCtech link will have a look. whats ya specs? -
I haven't received mine yet, because I decided to exercise more than a little patience (as I have ordered the SLi spec which according to Sager/Clevo) is delayed until the end of Feb.)
I ordered:
NP9262 (obviously)
Core2Duo E6850 (was a difficult decision but I decided to go 2xfaster Cores/FSB over 4xcores Q6600)
4GB RAM (like ya do - cuz it was only $50 more)
2x8800M SLi (which at the time was supposed to be available mid-end Jan)
1x80GB SATA HDD (which has now been junked in favour of a UK keyboard as US laptops will be US spec keyboards - this is easy to straighten out with Xotic - just tell them you want UK keyboard, which is $49 extra - and coincidentally is £21.50 + VAT extra at DPCtech!)
no 2nd HDD and no 3rd HDD (I have plans to put 2x32GB/64GB SSD in HDD's 1 and 2 and use a 250GB in bay 3
DVD writer (don't care which one it is - not bothered about blu-ray yet)
Bluetooth (for my DiNovo)
2MP webcam (Std)
4965N Wi-Fi (Std)
TV Tuner w/express card remote
SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio Xpress card. (7.1)
Vista Ultimate 32/64Bit (both versions - only ordered because it was cheap)
Std laptop bag.
and I think that's about it! - came to just over $4000 - which equates after bank tranfer fees/exchange rates etc. to approx £2050 - incl. insured delivery.
You will have to pay import duty @17.5% on the final fee upon delivery.
I have ordered from the US before and had to pay this.
Hope this helps.

Quote: the setup im thinking of getting is just over £1,600 with sli 8800m^^ import duty is gonna cost me like £200 thats a lot. very nice set up ah really annoyed leaning towards this over the m7950 coz of the sli 8800m's^^
I assume that the "m7950" you are referring to is a Alienware M9750?
I have just checked Alienware UK's website and the 8800M GTX is not offered as a GPU option with that notebook.
They are no doubt paving the way for the M17x notebook which looks really nice - has Core2Xtreme support and SLi 8800's........but at a price!
I suppose there is a compromise - a M9750 with 2x7950GTX SLi which gives approx the same performance as 1x8800, but is faster than 2x8700's -
ThePhantomGnome, where do you live? Just so people know, in the EU there is no duty on the laptop, you'll only have to pay VAT (which usually is more than 18% of the total value).
-
also look at www.novatech.co.uk
-
the only one in the UK that does - to my knowledge is www.dpctech.net
I've been reading the Rockdirect forums since last year - and although the D900C/901C has been mentioned - Rockdirect hasn't yet stocked it. -

how do you feel about buying yours from USA as they have no tech help in UK and if something goes wrong you have to return it, its gonna cost an arm and a leg? -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
i was just wondering is it possible to have the laptop sent as a gift to aviod TAX, as i heard that items sent as a gift dont get TAXED and it is gift really......its a gift from ME to ME^^
-
If you live in the UK, you will pay more than 200 pounds as import tax (VAT). For every thousand pounds you pay 175 more. So at 1500 - 1600 you will pay more than 260 (up to 280) pounds VAT.
A gift is a gift up to a certain value. Considering that they will send this to you with a certain declared value (which is higher than a few pounds to be considered as a gift) you will pay VAT. -
anyway the DPC TECH call center and support is really amazing, they had some delivery problems and they deliver the laptop 2 weeks after. Well, now my friend has a free Silver warranty and a bran new PC Game (Crysis)

Here is a link which backs it up : http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channels...ent&id=HMCE_PROD_009989&propertyType=document
I have no regrets about buying mine from the USA, for 2 reasons:
1) it's cheaper than buying it from the UK (£2400 vs. £2750 from dpctech) - although I may regret it if I have to send the laptop back twice, but let's hope it doesn't come to that!
and 2) I know how good some UK companies are at staying in business - Remember SavRow anyone? - for those that don't they used to be a Clevo reseller specialising in 'Bespoke' systems - actually they were just Clevo's with nice paint jobs, much like Falcon NW - ever wondered why all the information on that company on wikipedia just vanished!
more food for thought? -

i leaning to towards buying it from exotic, when you get yours tell me what its like, how heavy and big it is also what the graphics are like on games^^ -
Regards mine, when I receive it I have no doubt it will be very nice, very fast and heavy!
When I receive it that is! -

ThePhantomGnome where do you live that VAT is 15%?
1600 without VAT, but either way, it's not that much for a D901C. I guess a M571RU-U would fit a lot better there. I mean, 1600 pounds is more like 3150US, while a D901C with a C2Q Q6000, 8800M GTX SLI, 4GB of RAM + shipping will set you back to around 3500. 3500 + VAT (even if it's 15%) is still 4000US (2000UK). That's still cheap compared to Europe, but also consider that upgrading will also cost some money.
PS: I've seen a T9300 beating a Q6600 in wPrime. -

2000 is definitely not bad compared to other resellers. Try other European resellers too, that have pick-up and return European warranty, so in case something happens you woun't have to pay 300$+ to send it and get it back. Also, get a 3 year warranty no matter what. You never know what may happen.
While many people consider USA as the country where anything can happen, I really beg to differ.
I've just read that the Customs here don't charge you the VAT for anything that doesn't have a receipt inside. Instead of that they just charge you for the declared value (which can be 10 bucks for a 4000$ laptop). This can happen when you have a friend that will send you the laptop without the receipt inside. So, this might be valid to other EU countries as well. This is according to an article in the news paper. The problem comes when you have more than one identical thing inside the package (ex 2 laptops). Then you're forced to pay VAT, as they consider that you are going to sell them.
But I don't advise you to do this, because you never know what may happen at the Customs and how much you'll get charged. -

might have a look at the Sager NP5792 could this use 2 x 8800m cards in it? if so then i could go for this one, looks nice is small and has a 17inch screen^^
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
^The 5792/3 can only use a single GPU.
-
SLI is not that great and there are driver problems. It costs around 700$ to get a second card, which totally makes it useless. 700$ + VAT for no more than 20 - 30% performance increase...is not that great
. You can also take the Dell M1730 into consideration, as well as the future Alienware M17x. Here's what Dell UK page has to say about the M1730: "Due to unprecedented demand for this system, we regret to inform you of a prolonged delivery time on your order."
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
god its so annoying that the NP5792 only surpports 1 card as i really like the look of it. -
SLI will and is useless for many people. SLI exists for so quite some time and drivers are still buggy and idiotic. My point is that you don't need SLI or probably never will. 7950GTX in SLI = 8800M GTX. 8800M GTX in SLI = 9800M GTX (or whatever it will be called). That's usually how things work (almost every time). 700$ for 20% performance increase (even though it might not even be 20%, or it may be even 20%) is too much in my opinion. I'd much rather do something else with 700$, but then again you can hope that sometime soon there will be good drivers for SLI cards and that you will feel the performance increase.
-
Yeah, I am with fade to black on this one, I mean with just one 8800GTX you can score anywhere from 9 to 10K in 3DMark06 right......so why is it when you put in another card and make them run together that you cant score anything more than 12 or 13K. I mean whats up with that, this is the way I see it.
3DMark06
1 8800GTX=9-10K
2x 800GTX(in SLI aka working together to deliver over a gig or GPU MB's)=18 to 20K
I mean if one can pull of that then 2 should pretty much double the score. -
The score you are talking about should mean doubling the CPU also. 3dmark makes a score for the cpu and the gpu.
12-14 k is to be expected from 8800M GTX SLI,considering that SLi 8800 GT`s , desktop versions, score about 13-14k. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
okay i see your points thanx F2B and DivineRiku i might just go for 1 graphics card.
-
Then with a quad core processor it should score that.
-
No no no! 3dmarks don`t just add up gigahertz and double the score! SLi won`t double up performance! core duo doesn`t double the performance from core solo!
It is all in the software, and how well it can use the hardware at its disposal.Never will you see a doubled score just by changing the core duo with quad and from 1 gpu to sli. It just doesn`t work that way. -
ThePhantomGnome, it's a wise decision. Even though some people here say that they buy the laptops to last, they usually change them once every year or two years (either by upgrading or by a new one
). I'd say you get one now, keep the money, sell the laptop a year from now and get a better one then. I'd much rather have 4000$ now, buy a 2000$ laptop now and one from the rest of the money after a year or so. This way I get new technology and better performance at the same price. Once you reach a certain level (it's like going from a E6600 to E6700 or Q6600 to Q6700) the performance difference is mostly minimal.
-
Yeah, I agree but I dont think most games or anything will require quad core or sli for a while. So the 9262 should last for at least 3 to 4 years, and I still dont think that the quad core will be outdated by that much.
-
golden opportunity for someone to run benchmarks and a review for the NP 5792/3 and compare with mine with 9262.
It would show the differences between quad and dual core... so at least people can see the difference.
Or someone with an e6850.
I enjoyed doing my review, how come nobody will do one for 5792 hehe. -
Yeah, lets put the 2 beast to a test.
-
My advice to ThePhantomGnome :
Wait until I get mine and i'll tell you if there is any real difference between Single 8800 and SLi, because I don't think the jury is out on that one yet!.....
Yes I accept that SLi maybe a little buggy in it's implementation, and not all games work well with it - one example is BF2 - which actually runs slower in SLi! - but this rule does not apply for all games running under SLi otherwise nVidia would have dumped the concept within a year of it's conception.
The 9262 on the whole has a few key advantages over the 579x series:
1) She runs Desktop CPU's - which are much cheaper as they are more mainstream (T7200 chips are still £200 in the UK which is much more expensive than a £160 Q6600!)
2) SLi MXM IV design - there is a lot of controversy on this one - as the D901C has required another motherboard revision to support the 8800's - but still, MXM is a standard which has been adopted by many notebook manufacturers - and SLi is definitely the thing to have if your planning a 'future-proof' laptop.
3) The best internal design of any notebook I have seen - bearing in mind that I have repaired notebooks in the past (including the D900T I am currently using at the moment). It has the best cooling design in the business and runs quieter than the 579x - They had to release a firmware update to dampen the fan noise.
and that is just a few of the advantages that are worth mentioning.
There is room for improvement on the 9262 though........it would be nice to see a backlit keyboard like the M17x from Alienware. Lets hope Clevo is planning one as an upgrade option. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
ok andy ill wait to see what yours is like.
coz i dont want to have to buy another laptop in a year or so just to keep up with games. -
No computer/laptop will last 4 years, just so you know, at least not until now. Quads are great, indeed and they may have a chance of running everything for two years, but after that you will get something new even if you don't need it.

thats the problem with computers and laptops having to update verything every 5seconds is stupid
