I posted this in the powernotebook forums too, but that site doesn't seem to get too much attention anymore.

I've been researching new laptops the last few days and I was all set to buy a Sager, but now it seems they have real durability issues. Perhaps this is how you can get a powerful machine for a reasonable price. Can anyone say if any of the other lesser-known brands like Crown, PowerPro and Chembook last longer? Or do you know the chances that the new models coming out (the 5760 and the 5580 specifically) are put together better?

I really don't want to spend 2500 on a notebook that only performs well for a year or two. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of going back to my original pick of the new Sony ar170 series.

Where are you getting the idea of durability issues?
I've not seen that mentioned here, and there are quite a few Sager/Clevo owners on this board.

Haha, sorry. I should have posed the question in a less accusatory manner. There were some complaints from a few separate people on the powernotebook.com forum and a random resellerratings forum thread I visited. Obviously not nearly enough evidence for an indictment, but it made me curious. Seemed to make sense with the good prices they were offering for high-performance machines and I also know that many high-end users upgrade their computers more frequently to keep up with current technology. So I thought maybe it was less of an issue for the people in this forum.

Anyway, this time with a little more tact, I would like to know what the people here think of the longevity of Sager computers compared with say Sony or Thinkpad, or even Crown and PowerPro. Otherwise, I can't really find any notebooks out there that look more promising than the new Sagers. Thanks.

I would recommend sager over sony. Sony will be more stylish and will be thinner and lighter however sager is well priced (sony is overpriced) and will outperform sony. Also I would say sony's reliability is on the poor side and sager's is pretty good. No one however can touch IBM and its thinkpad line in reliability. My aunt has one that is 7 years old and running very strong.

Same answer I gave you at the PowerNotebooks.com forum:

"Just because you see a complaint or two, or even a few, on any forum don't think that reflects properly on the Sager product. You will find the same thing for any brand including Sony.

The fact is that 10s of thousands of Sager laptops are out there, and the complaints are few.

Just go to www.notebookforums.com or www.notebookreview.com or even look around this forum to see how many people are satisfied versus how many complaints you see.

Sager, ASUS, PowerPro and Crown laptops are all top quality and quite durable...there is nothing to worry about there."

I'm also pretty sure that Sager is able to make their prices lower because the company is run by "Sager," the electronics distributor (look at www.sager.com). They HAVE all the gear so they can control the price!

If you are worried about a few complaints thread, then I wouldn't even check the threads about Dell and Alienware /shiver.

Have to realize that laptops are just machines and not all of them are perfect.
(Last I checked Humans are not perfect either)
So of course there will be some rotten apples among the bunch.
This is why you must pick which one has less rotten apples I guess.

I have literally spent a whole year researching what laptop to get.
I visited various forums and websites and contacted resellers DIRECTLY on the phone as well.
I have not received the VERY 1st laptop I have ever purchased until a week from now but from what I have found, Sagers are a pretty good machine in general.

I hate to pop that balloon, but Sager-Midern Computers, Inc. has nothing to do with Sager Electronics. :)

This does not degrade in any way the quality of the Sager laptop as has been represented well here by several people.

Sager keeps the price down two ways:

    1. The don't gouge the buyer and then offer discounts to every special interest group that asks for it.
    2. The don't spend bazillions of $$ on advertising.

I have owned a bunch of different notebooks from mainstream componanies (Dell, HP, Acer); I was satisfied for the most part, good machines.

My current notebook is a Sager. It has far surpassed the other notebooks I've had in terms of ownership experience - it feels so much better to own this than a mainstream clone. The build quality is better, along with the design and components.

I'll also back up durability - my Sager model has strong and sturdy ABS plastic for the construciton - no flex, feels solid. The back of the lid on my model is aluminum, which is much better than plastic. The lid nor the chassis flexes at all.
Since I recieved it over seven months ago, it has run without issues. No problems, performs great.

As has been posted, you'll see complaints about every company, but the vast majority are satisfied IMO.

I would say that Sager builds good laptops as well. I ordered a 9750 for wife and when we got it, there was problems with the sound, was defective motherboard. We got another Sager 9750 and that one had bad sectors on the hard drive. When I contacted them, I went there the same day and got a new HD replacement. (I live at most 30 min from them)

Since then the laptop has been flawless. Granted I had problems at first there is always the chance for a 'bad apple'. But since getting the HD swapped, my wife has felt the laptop is great to use, no issues with durability at all.

Also what Kilim has said about complaints is true, if you ever go to Dell forums, you'll see lots and I mean lots of complaints. However the amount of people without problems are high too, just they are often happy to use it and don't have a need to post about it.

Yes I agree with Lyshen. As many will point out, a happy customer will just be that--happy with his/her product. Content with what they got, they will say nothing.

But a dissatisfied customer will often go to the trouble of making sure everyone knows just how dissatisfied they are with the product they are having problems with.

    Keep that in mind ;)
