So, I've heard that if you buy a Windows 7 laptop after June 5th you are eligible to be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro (when available) for only $14.99.

My question is, will Sager and other Clevo resellers offer this deal?

As far as I know it's not through the manufacturers; it's a deal from Microsoft themselves. It'll likely be done through the Windows Anytime Upgrade service built into Windows 7.

Edit: That said, I'd much rather buy a full copy rather than upgrading. Upgrading tends to have problems.

Windows 7 upgrade disks give users the option of doing a full clean install if one chooses to do so. That's how it probably will be with windows 8 as well.

As Gear332 mentioned you'll go through Microsoft for this offer. To get full deatails on it you'll want to contact them. The only way resellers could offer it directly is if Microsoft started hanging out vouchers to all different resellers of not only Sager/Clevo but to the hundreds of places you can buy a computer.

I've tried the Windows 8 developer preview and I have to say the system I tried it on was a lot snappier but I couldn't stand Metro. I had to disable it, I found it pointless and cumbersome to use.

When removing it, it is pretty much Win7 with optimizations.

Plus, they're removing the Aero interface which is part of the things I like about Windows 7.

Dumb question, will there be a "compatibility mode" with Windows 8 so that programs and games made before the release of Windows 8 will work just as well as they did on Windows 7?

They would have serious problems selling it if it couldn't run older software or hardware, and they have said it will. After the vista debacle I'm pretty sure they've put a lot of effort into making sure it does work.

Yes, I understand that, went to Microsoft last time and filled out a form. When I bought an Alienware a couple years ago, when it came time for the upgrade, Dell sent me the Win 7 disk as did some Clevo resellers to other customers. Will this happen again like last time?

That's a tricky questions It's completely up to Microsoft actually, they control their market by even the smallest bits and pieces.

I would think that they would do something a like... but I'm not to sure.. dat windows 8 man

Ya Microsoft most likely won't be doing that again. They did it with the Vista because they canceled the project (because it was literally that, an experiment).

    Link.

I buy the hypothesis that this move is to save battery life and not getting rid of old looking aesthetics.

I would think if they're getting rid of Aero, they have something in mind to replace it. I can't imagine they'd just get rid of something that most people liked just for the sake of getting rid of it.
