Has anyone directly compared the 17" WUXGA screen as found on Sager (and clone) laptops with the superb Sony one? I'm wondering how much I will lose if I switched brands.

No, they're not superb, Sony makes some of the best displays in the business.

I have the regular WSXGA+ matte screen. It's just a regular matte screen. Sony ones look better.

I should be more specific. I meant the glossy WUXGA screen on the 5720 and 9880.

I still think the Sony screen would be superior. Sager generally uses LG panels for their displays.

If you're looking to upgrade, it won't be a huge drop in quality. Noticable, but not drastic. The Sony's display will be a bit more sharp and bright.

yeah sony is at the top when it comes to displays, although I would argue Fujitsu
