Just about to buy the 8170 but 1 thing I wanted to clear up was. I've heard people say Sager you can upgrade later on. I've looked through xotic but found nothing regarding upgrading.

I guess my question is. 2 years from now when I want a better processor or gpu am I able to just send my laptop back for a refresh without buying a new laptop or can I buy a new motherboard/gpu or something?

the CPU you might be able to upgrade but it would not be a new CPU, you would likely have to find one on ebay.

As far as the GPU goes, you are limited to what was offered in your laptop at the time it was being offered through Sager or resellers. Replacing the mainboard and GPU is not likely to happen either.

The upgrades most people refer to are swapping drives, RAM, wireless card, and maybe the CPU.

2 years from now, Sandy Bridge parts (which is what is offered in current gen laptops) will be out of sight and Sager may carry enough stock to repair those laptops still under warranty.

With Sager computers basically all parts can be removed and you can put a new part in. This would apply to almost all parts short of the motherboard. An easy way to know if its upgradable is if that parts has upgrade options during customization you can replace it down the road. The CPU, GPU, RAM, Hard drive, Wireless card etc can all be upgraded in the future. This is typically done by the user. You would buy a part and put in a new one.

2 years down the road you can upgrade if the part is compatible. Sizes change from time to time. For example take the CPU. The first gen core i cpu's are not compatible with the second gen ones. You can upgrade your CPU but it does have to be compatible. Lets say you start with the i7 2670QM but a few years you want a faster processor you can put a i7 2860QM in there. But the current CPU at that time probably will not work.

Hutsady... thanks for the reply. I guess you can ignore my email through the website lol. I guess i'll be ordering my laptop with you soon. since upgrading cpu/gpu seem not realistic 2 years from now... and waiting for this new Ivy and Kepler just seems redundant. Meaning every 6 months something better will come and basically I could tell myself to wait for next 5 years till i get a laptop.

That's the advice that I typically like to repeat here- that if you wait for the next big thing, you'll always be waiting. You can do some of the upgrades others have mentioned, but realistically they'll always be pricey compared to the gains you'd get in just upgrading to a new model. (the CPU and GPU will be expensive anyway. RAM/HDD are cheap).

You're very welcome. I also replied to your email as well so you have double the answer :)

Its so true thats there's always something better coming out in 6 months. If you wait you're always waiting. With IB and Kepler coming out soon (hopefully) it's not a bad idea to wait for their launch.
