    hey,

i recently had a problem with the graphics card in my sager np8150. i took the graphics card out to get it repaired but now i can't get it to boot up. it just shuts down when i power it on after beeping for 5 seconds with the 3 lights on the left also flashing. the fans also spin at full speed during the beeps.

so i just wanted to know if i can get it to boot at all without the graphics card or not. because before i took it out the graphics card was dead anyway and didn't even get recognized by the computer.

i can't get the card back anytime soon so if there's any way to run the computer without it please let me know.

    thanks

It will not boot without a GPU. Period.

From what I know the HM65 chipset in the P1**HM series does not support the use of integrated graphics, hence why you can't boot.

I believe optimus equipped laptops can do this (P1**EM and onwards). haven't tried myself, but someone who has can prolly chime in.

Best you wait till your card fixes :) how long to go?

I know the machine can't run iGPU. But why does it refuse to boot without a available GPU is beyond me. Yeah, this is a notebook. So what? Can't I run it as a small server or something?

It needs a working display adapter to pass POST. If a test fails during the POST, the system will relay that in some way, shape, or form (in this case, by shutting down).

thanks for the replies guys. it's still gonna be a few months before i get it back but i'm not bothered about that. just wanted to ask you guys if there was a way around it or not. just hope that i didn't mess anything up when i took it out. :)

also if anyone reads this do the repaired graphics cards have a higher chance of failing again? would it be better to just get a new one? thanks

i dont think theyre actually gonna repair ur card, unless theyre baking it, in which case it may last from a couple weeks to a year or so. if they swap it out with a different card (which i think is probably more likely), it again depends on if that one is refurbished or completely new...

All sager machines can't be run in integrated only mode, even the EM/SM series since the EC freaks out.

I certainly hope a certified repair facility doesn't bake it. That is homebrew status in lieu of a reflow station.

@pixels - in the case of something electronic, with a PCB, I'd say yes: a refurbished/recertified product is more prone to failure.

If the problem is between the die and the package rather than than the package and the PCB then there is nothing you can do except replace the chip anyway.
