Sager vs. Clevo

I don't know too much about these two brands but I do know that all Sager models are built on Clevo platforms. Is this true? If so, which is more desirable and why?

 

Not all Sager models are based on Clevo's but the majority are. You can not buy directly from Clevo, only affiliated resellers, like Powernotebooks.com, XoticPC, and Pro Star to name a few. Buying from a smaller reseller is generally better than buying from Sager, both price wise and customer service wise, I recommend buying a Clevo from a small reseller rather than Sager.

 

What about Sager/Clevo vs. Alienware? How do they compare from a performance and reliability point-of-view? I like how Alienwares look but it seems I can get a better config from Sager for a lower price.

 

Alienware look good but after my nightmare with the m15x i would never recommend them to anyone again.
the amount of x AW owners that are now clevo owners is quite astounding but understandable as clevo OEM's are far superior in build quality and especially after sales help and technical support.

 

Well as both a Clevo and Alienware owner I can tell you both are exceptional. As Mr DJ said Alienware "was" (and I emphasize the "was") pretty bad both customer service wise and quality wise and I avoided them up until now because of this, but that has in fact changed with Dell's takeover of Alienware, and Alienware's new laptop line. My M17x to my surprise is actually built better than my M570RU was, and even more surprisingly cools even better, something which I thought was impossible given Clevo's almost unbeatable reputation for notebook cooling solutions.

As for how they compare it will boil down to opinion and what you need/want. If you want rock solid build quality, good cooling as well as configuration variety they are both relatively equal in that regard. If you want friendly customer service Clevo resellers will win in this department, but if warranty is the main concern for you then there is really no competition to Dell/Alienware's complete care warranty which will cover spills, accidental damage, defective parts etc, and they will even send a technician to your home to replace the parts. If in fact your computer still works but is determined to need a replacement, they will send you a new computer first and after you get it you will return the damaged or defective one. Basically what it will boil down to is you figuring out what you want/need and then take the time to weigh the benefits and cons of both companies, and then make an educated informed decision.
