I have been contemplating what kind of laptop to get for college, and my mind has originally between Dell and Alienware for their gaming systems. However I shaved off Dell and it came down to Alienware. But I was recently introduced to Sager (NP9262). I was extremely attracted to the price of the Sager from Powernotebook. But I was wondering about the reliability of the laptop. Is it really buggy with problems like the Alienware m15x was having (which was what i had my sights on). How good is the customer service.
And also for the processor units i was a bit confused with what was offered.
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor E6850 / 4MB L2 Cache, 3.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 / 6MB L2 Cache, 3.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB
Intel® Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 / 8MB L2 Cache, 2.40GHz, 1066MHz FSB
Intel® Core 2 Quad Processor Q6700 / 8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz, 1066MHz FSB
VS. what is offered on Dell XPS and Alienware m15x m17x. The differences
Intel® Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1GHz (3MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4GHz (3MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Duo T9500 2.6GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
Intel® Core 2 Extreme X9000 2.8GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
Why the sager one has a higher speed, and Cache.
Also the difference between the Quad Processor and the Core 2 extreme and the performance differences.

As a current college student, I would highly recommend you to go for the 5793 or upcoming M850TU. 9262 is too big to bring to classes.
9262 has higher FBS because it uses desktop processor.
all sager laptops are bugs free. -
the differences are desktop and mobile processors. the customer service is outstanding. from tech support to repairs. i'm one of the few peeps on here that actually had to get a repair done (mobo replaced) and the turnaround time was 8 days total, and that was 3 day shipping both ways, nothing out of my pocket except gas to drop it off @ UPS. and definitely consider what nirvana said. the 9262 is probably ~2 5793's in size. everybody that has one, and the review on here said it's HUMONGOUS.
-
Well my friend has a xps 1730 and i don't mind lugging something like that to class and that itself is pretty big. And for the processors is there any performance difference from the ones listed for the 9262 and the mobile laptop ones, I can see that between the 5793 and the 9262 the different processor units,or is it like comparing oranges to apples.
Pretty much using for everything, studying, watching movies, movie editing, playing games ranging from wc3 - Crysis
*EDIT** now that i look at the 15" model that doesn't seem to be to bad, pretty much the same things i want in the 17" except for the raid config. -
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I can swear by Sager for their support and build quality after having owned two of their laptops.
-
np5793 is a good one imo. Its about 8.5 pounds from what i read which is the around the same as the m15x. (most reviews on the m15x say it ranges from 7.5-9.5) thats all that matters to me. hey if the weight is the same and your bag can fit a 17 inch laptop why not use the space. u could wait for the M60TU but thee question is do u wanna wait that long.
Customer service... I have never heard one bad thing about it.
p.s the 9262 is a tank... if u want to work out and go to class at the same time go for it. =) -
I'm ordering my NP5793 tomorrow, and reliability is important to me as well. I'm really paranoid that it's gonna have the same problem that my m15x had...weird crappy keyboard response. The problem went away when I uninstalled the synaptics trackpad drivers, so it was definately a software issue..which is why im so afraid of the problem following me.
Nobody's ever experienced this on a Sager, right? >.>
Oh, and to actually reply to the OP, I would suggest you go for the 5793. NP9262 is enormous. -
for movie editing you can cut your time in half with the quad core, no joke.
i am converting an eleven minute thirty second, 1440x1080i movie that i shot with my hd camcorder down to 1280x720p and it is taking 10 minutes using sony vegas software. -
In case you are considering the d901c I think you might be far better with:
* An SLi Desktop that is faster then any Clevo to play games online and with friends ($1500)
* An Xbox 360 ($300-$400, media center extender and some games)
* A light but fast laptop for work and study (Tablet PC maybe?), but not so good for gaming ($1500)
Total: $3500.
You would be more future proof. As for realible, Sager is not more or less then any other tech.
Cheers
PS: Really go for this kind of laptops if you definitely need the convinience of having a lot of power in a portable box. -
My sights are setting toward a NP5793, pretty much all the stuff i want from the 9262 for cheaper and smaller build. Will be comparing prices from Powernotebooks and Xoticpc as i heard these two companies were one of the best for sagers/clevos.
A question that i had in terms of OS, for everyday activities and the current games out would it better to get a 32bit or 64bit.
Oh and for the HD 320 @ 5200 rpm vs 200 @ 7200 rpm is the extra 2000 rpm really worth the 120 gigs of space or would the speed not even be noticeable? -
they are same speed
-
Hmpf, I'm about to go pickup my Sager NP9262 from the UPS later today, and I've been wondering all this while if I should have gotten the 5793, which was my initial choice.
I think the 5793 looks a lot better (but I dislike the 1 HD limitation), I didn't know 9262 was that much bigger than the 5793 as you guys say. I guess I'll just have to live with it. Does the weight really bother you? I don't mind the heaviness, its good, manly exercise.
I chose the 9262 because it is slightly faster, more storage space, higher upgrade-ability. -
And you get 120 GB more space... -
manly exercise if you carry the laptop alone; with full load of book in backbag, you will be more like a slave.
-
I was pretty stupid lol.. I was steering away from the 5793 Pecause i thought it was a 15"...
I know stupid -
I bought a Clevo from R&J which is the equivalent model to the 5793. Very well built. No dead pixels. Was delivered in 3 days (nice change after waiting over a month and never getting the Alienware m15x even assembled). Customer support has been very good...had minor bios issue that was addressed in less than 24 hours. Never had any issues with overheating or downclocking. Okay battery life (2-3 hours...better than my old notebook which had a desktop processor) and reasonable weight (from this standpoint I'd really recommend it over the 9262). Very happy with my purchase.

You're never going to enjoy your 9262 with that attitude!
Think about Quad Core and all the other good things.
That thing is a beast and runs on pure testosterone (also electricity)!
Be proud of every inch of glorious laptop under your wrists from the time you touch that power button
when all the Quad Core muscle breaks loose to the time you shut it down to wipe the sweat from
your forehead and trying to control your abnormally high adrenaline levels while you gasp
for air that the massive cooling system has sucked away from you!!!
God exists and he lives inside the 9262 because that laptop is heaven.
Now worship it like a man and quit whining!
You can cry when you get your electricity bill!
PS: This post might be a little biased -
Oh i have read that some of the previous models for this had a fan problem has this been resolved with the 5793?
-
Everything I've read has said that the NP5793's fan system is noisy, but extremely effective.
-
haha cvolker, you make a funny! I picked it up earlier and am using the 9262 now. I dig it!
Many programs I thought wouldn't work on x64 Vista do. Perhaps I'll throw on Ubuntu as well.
My only beef thus far - 1 dead pixel! Its annoying. But whatchoo gun do?
I've got the NZKT 3 fan aluminum cooler running under it, works fairly well. I could cook breakfast on this thing.
[Electricity? Hmm...I'd like to be able to run it off-grid somehow, solar perhaps. At the rate this civilization is crumbling, it would be a good idea]

Great for smaller PCs, needs more work for bigger ones like mine! -

i have a question along with Rich. Could i bring the np5793 into a class room and not have everyone look at me because of the noice. Or even could i bring it into a library without causing a distraction. (just surfing the net and using word... not gaming)
Thanks

@Rich.Carpenter:
With the current fan firmware, as long as you set the fans in low-speed mode, it should run FAIRLY quiet, provided you're not blocking the vents and causing it to heat up (because the fans WILL hit full speed if it gets too hot).
The NP9262 runs almost whisper-quiet, but it might annoy anyone walking by you, since it shunts a LOT of hot air out the back of the unit.
@Tenuulch:
Where is the dead pixel? If it's in the center quadrant of the screen, it should be covered by warranty if it came from Sager. The center quadrant is found by splitting the screen into 9 equal rectangles (or overlaying a large # symbol). The center rectangle is the center quadrant. -

On this topic, I'd like to talk about my experiences with Sager's customer relations so far. On their official site, from which I ordered my computer, they don't let you ship the computer to a different adress than the billing adress. My mom is paying for this on her credit card, and I normally ship things to my dad's office building because there's always somebody there to sign for things.
Initially we called up my mom's credit card people, and had them add my dad's office adress to the memo section so that Sager would see the adress as registered and be able to ship it there. I then decided that I didn't really trust the credit card company, and we decided to ship it to this house - The same adress as the billing..so there couldn't possibly be any problems. I would just stay home from school on the day the thing was scheduled to show up, and sign for it myself. This was monday night. Yesterday, Brian Liaw, Sagers's sales manager, emailed me just to make sure that the two adressers were the same, and that we had paid with a credit card. (If it was a Debit card, we would need to tell the bank to increase the daily spending limit, or we would have to wait for them to make daily withdrawls for several days until the entire computer had been paid for.)
I emailed him back, and let him know that yes, the two adresses were the same, and yes, this was a regular credit card..no spending limit. He emailed me back very quickly, to let me know he got my message, and that it would ship in 1-2 days.
Today, I got another email from him, saying that the bank had the billing adress different from the shipping. Since the shipping is this home adress...that didn't make sense. I called my mom. Turns out Brian Liaw had already called and spoken to her. The credit card company, retards that they are, misunderstood the call we had made monday night..and had made my dad's office the billing adress for the card. My mom said that she was working online and with the bank to fix it..and that Brian was being kept informed.
Just to be safe, I replied to the email I got from Brian. All I really said was that I knew what was going on, and that I would like him to either call or email me later today to keep me posted. Once again, he got back to me within 15 minutes to confirm that he got my message. He also said they're going to straighten this out and get my order shipped ASAP. So far, I am very impressed with how personal and fast their customer service has been. I am speaking directly with the sales manager, and he is responding to my emails almost instantly. So far so good....if only the credit card people knew wtf they were doing like Sager does. -
I have never heard a bad thing about xoticpc.
on a second note does anyone with the np5793 wanna take a video of it running on high speed fans and low speed fans =)

you can find a few vids like that if you search for m570ru

i think callidor meant to add "on youtube" to the end of that post

i advise anyone on getting a powerfull laptop that they plan on keeping for 3 years or more to also get the extended warranty from sager direct. that way you don't have to worry about reliability issues.
i have made the mistake with the older D900T and did not get an extended warranty with it. in the end it cost me $1k dollars in repairs and the thing died again....i learned my lesson. -
I am going to place a order for the 5793 this weekend, at first Xotic and PNB seemed to be the same price but then prices on PNB went down by a little. Last question I have while browsing around, it seems like people were having trouble with the Intel Robson Turbo Memory. I plan on having 4 gigs of ram, (Vista 64bit Ultimate). Would it be worth getting the Turbo memory or would it just be something that would cause future problems and annoyances.
-
-
i want to mention that sager has the better warranty than xotic or powernotebooks, it appears. sager covers shipping both ways with their 3 year extended warranty. that can save you a good $50 dollars from shipping and insurance if something goes wrong.
-
Hmm might have been lost in the paragraph. Is the Intel Robson Turbo Memory really worth it or is it just a potential source of problems?
-
From what I've read, its downsides outweigh its benefits. It will probably help you boot up faster, but as far as my understanding goes, that's really the only plus you'll see out of it. Maybe somebody who's used it has had different experiences.
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I dnt think the Robson will help you.
-
-
Even at 2 GB of RAM, the Robson memory becomes mostly worthless. The more RAM you add, the less it helps the system. It seems to work best when it's matched to your RAM, but nobody wants to run Vista with just 1 GB of RAM.
-
Guys, just wait for TM 2.0 ... maybe it will be worth it. Until then, TM 1.0 is off limits
