After talking with XoticPC, Powernotebooks, and Sager.com - Sager.com offers the best student discount (as far as price goes), which in turn is the cheapest buy for the m8660tu model. Xotic and Power may be cheaper for the everyday buyer, but if you are a current college student you can get a cheaper price by purchasing directly from Sager.com.

At least with my system: (It is possible different config's would qualify or less savings)

    NP8660

    9800 GT GPU
    T9600 2.8 ghz
    WSXGA+ "Glare Type" (1680x1050)
    512MB nVidia GeForce 9800M GT DDR3
    4,096MB DDR3 1066MHz Dual Channel Memory
    320GB 7200RPM HDD
    Vista Home Premium

I understand that xotic and Power offer longer warranty's but I think the price difference was worth it. 8)

Good luck guys, this is hopefully my last post here 8)

As soon as I saw your post I bolted to the sager site, I don't see a student discount anywhere!

You have to call them - they asked me if I was ready to place my order today if the discount was good enough, of course I was ready to buy it... and they offered me a little over $100 USD discount.

It's better than the 50% ground shipping discount... (around $20) - and you don't have to pay with a check or wire transfer for the "3% discount" that the others offer. I payed with credit.

3% discount on the order I placed was $78 USD.

Only for people who use credit maybe. Otherwise with the 100 dollar discount its about the same price as xotic or PN. 50% off shipping is still an awesome deal. 50 bucks for overnight!

Ever since my debacle with Hybridgear, I've learned to always buy big ticket items with a credit card. Plus, many credit card companies will give you a one year warranty & theft protection (some only give 90 days).

When Hybridgear tried to take my money and skip town right before they close shop, my credit card company stepped up and intervened.

In no way am I implying that the folks at XoticPC & PNB are swindlers like the crooks at Hybridgear, nor am I questioning Donald's and Justin's integrity. I'm just more careful these days because..."Once bitten, twice shy." I rather have peace of mind and the negotating power of a big credit card company on my side than a measley 3% discount.

still, 75 plus a 20 something discount for shipping is pretty close to 100. And as you can see from the thread about whats the point of sager.com, its more expensive by about 100. So from that, its more expensive.

Protecting yourself is the best reason of all; however, the other thing that should be kept in mind is, unless you write a check off of your own checking account and mail it in to the reseller, you're still going to be paying almost that entire 3% discount back to your bank in the form of wire transfer charges, so you're not saving quite as much as you might think you are.

Yes, this is true. In my case the fee was going to be more than the 3% saved. Getting my 1% back from my rewards card was actually cheaper, faster, easier, and with better protection.

Time to brush up on your math skills Shyster1. :)

The 3% cash discount on a $2,000 purchase is $60, while for many the wire transfer fee is 0 (at Washington Mutual for example) and rarely does it exceed $20, unless you are using Wells Fargo where it is $35 which is the highest we have ever encountered.

So the best answer is to check with your bank first to see what the fee is, and then once you compare that to your actual cash discount you can make an educated decision as to whether it is worth the savings.

It probably should be your last post here, since this one is totally false, as is the one you made later stating that you received a 3% discount when using your credit card.

Sager has confirmed that no such discount was given, nor do they offer such discounts...period!

Please keep any further posts truthful. This kind of fantasy can cause a lot of trouble for all concerned.

Of course, it all depends, ultimately, on what the deal is with your particular bank; if the bank won't charge a fee, then that's the end of the matter and the 3% discount is indeed quite valuable. Also, if the fee is 3%, but only up to a cap, then that is again, a pretty decent deal, provided the cap is significantly less than 3% of the gross sales price. However, because this will vary from institution to institution, always check first, because someone might end up with an institution that charges full freight on the entire transfer amount.

And no, I'm not disagreeing with you in the least. :D :D

I used 20$ last year for a wire transfer, and so did most of my friends that bought from Xotic.

Sorry to hear about your your hybridgear debacle. Yeah I purchased mine with CC too (notebook in my sig for $1650 shipped) so that I am protected. Thus far PCMW has been ok and so far I think I got the best price but we'll see if they deliver the goods - i'll post a review on my PCMW lappie when I receive it. They're telling me first week of august they will ship it. So look for my review in about 3 weeks ish.

At Eurocom we offer a 5% student discount and you can use your credit card inside North America. I get wire transfers on a daily basis for European/Asian orders and I can tell you, unless you have some sort of special Banking package offerd by your bank you pay about $15.00-20.00 for a transfer in North America. More in Europe and Asia. But I can tell you one thing... Wire transfer from Asia arrive same day. In North America it takes 3 to 5 days!

    @jshore

Interesting...we receive wire transfer from within the US in about 2 hours. :)

Your estimate of $15-20 for the wire fee is about right...some are less and the famous Wells Fargo is almost double everyone else.

    ^--^
I would suggest visiting their website to see their pricing. There is no way he would know what model or configuration you would want, so how could he state any pricing here?

That's pretty good timing for a wire transfer paladin. Wish they were all that fast!

    Thanks as always!

lol... this thread is rather confusing and, at times, somewhat sharp ;).
I guess what everyone can take away from this is to shop around and ask for price comparison. If you have an issue with wire transfers perhaps call the different vendors and ask what they can do for you, or drop a question on the forums regarding the specific business and their rating.
Personally I was always told not to gloat over what I was given, there is always someone out there who will be able to get a better deal then anyone else thanks to insider info or whatever. As long as YOU feel like you are getting value for your money, feel satisfied with your purchase. None of the great vendors on this site have outrageous prices on their products.
