ok here we go, I have already emailed Justin at xoticPc yesterday but have not got an answer yet so I figured I'll ask here and then when I get an answer from xotic I'll post it here.

Yesterday I was browsing through IFL90 owners manual and found specs for hard drive that can be used in this system:
    Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
    • 9.5mm height, 2.5” HDD
    • Up to 160GB capacity
    • Supports SATA 1.5Gb/s
    • 5400 RPM
    • Easily removable
So since I ordered 7200RPM drive this raises questions. Will it be supported at those given speeds? XoticPc, Powernotebooks and Sager even install a 7200RPM with 3.0Gb/s drives but according to owners manual it does not support it or at least it is not going to run on those speeds.

I do want a better performance than 5400, but if it is not fully supported why would I spend extra for 7200 when I can get more storage fore less?

I think thats describing the standard default HD that comes with the IFL90.

Maybe, but since IFL90 come as a barebone(whitebook) there is no default, so I would consider the manual as a guidebook for building the system. Correct me if I'm wrong.

7200 rpm drives might add a bit more noise, heat, and possibly consume slightly a bit more power, but they are all standardized, and all specs within the possible limits, so it will definitely work.

The system has no clue whether you installed a 5400RPM or 7200RPM hard drive so there is no way it won't 'support' the faster speeds. You could buy any 2.5" SATA drive and be fine.

    Ok this is probably right.
What about 3.0Gbs drives which are not supported.
Oh I know backwards compatible what a rip off.

Backwards compatibility is the best answer I can provide here unfortunately. :-\

There really is no advantage to having SATA 3.0Gbps from what I can tell. No hard drive, desktop or laptop, is going to get close to its 300MB/s transfer rate. At most a really fast notebook hard drive is going to push 60MB/s or so, so we're not even close to the 150MB/s transfer rate of SATA I.

So if I bought a 7200 RPM 160GB HD it wouldn't be any faster than a 5400 RPM 160GB HD?

Thats not at all what he is saying, he is just saying SATA 3.0Gbps is overkill. Of course the 7200 is faster.
