    Hello,

I am going to buy a new hdd for my laptop. At narrowed the option to 2. The Samsung hdd and Western hdd have the same specifications for the same price. Only the warranty is different. Samsung gives 36 months while Western 12 months. Are there problems with any of these two drives. Which should I buy?

Although anecdotal, I have had good experiences with Samsung products, and the opposite with WD. However, for the same price, it would seem that the product with the three-year warranty is a better purchase –if for nothing else, then because you can get it swapped if something is wrong.

The drive itself, are they the same?

You don't mention which size HDD. If 500GB then the WD5000BEVT is the better choice.

However, I don't know whether the improvements in this HDD have been reflected in the current smaller capacity WD HDDs. According to WD, the Scorpio Blue HDDs have a 3 year warranty.

    Hello,

Both drives are 500 GB. The store I was looking to buy from was giving only 1 year, though other stores are giving 3 years.

    Thanks for the clarification.

The Samsung 500GB is a 3 platter HDD and, while it is an engineering triumph to have squeezed 3 platters into the 9.5mm thick size, it runs relatively hot and performance is similar to a 320GB 5400rpm HDD.

I have been using the WD5000BEVT since October and it has clocked up over 1600 hours. The performance is good and it doesn't create much heat. If you have a warranty problem, then go direct to WD. I think the warranty is 3 years from manufacture, which is in their database.

Great. Thanks for your answers. The heat is important since is going to stay on top of a another hdd which is at 7200 rpms.

The Scorpio Blue 320GB I have in mine runs quite cool, and is very quiet. I have a big bias towards WD though. Been using their drives for over 10 years now.
