Im definetly considering on gettin a ssd for OS and WOW (espeacialy for WOW)
But i heard here intel ssds are the "best" for x7200 or x8100 or something, as in it works best.
Is there some kind of limitations i should now of before i make my purchase ?
Theoreticaly i shouuld be waiting for 3rd gen intel ssds, but seeing as i heard rumor of a february 2011 launch date, im definetly not gonna wait that much.
Thus i am eyeing sandforce 1200 drives. It seems its the drives ppl from anandtech favor. I was originaly going on the crucial c300 path, but i heard over here ppl saying having problems, and even the guy on anandtech had few problems. Chances are these are initial firmware issues bound to be fixed. But i can't tell.
Anyway in the sandforce 1200 drive lot, i am eyeing, the OCZ vertex 2 120gb, and Mushkin Callisto deluxe 90 and 120gb.
Both have downloadable firmware, and for instance the downloadable firmware on the mushkin drive is 3.4.0 wheres reviews were made on a 2.1.0 drive, and that was in september this year.
Improvements are bound to be made, but i cant tell since it is extremly hard to find an opinion regarding the latest firmware, let alone a review.
So if there are ppl out there using ssd in your clevo machine, (if its the x7200 even better) i'd like to hear some opinions.
This saturday im going to the capital and i might buy something, even before i order the laptop. Since Mysn.doesnt have the ssd i need, and i'd like to have the warranty in my country.

I have a 120GB OWC Mercure Extreme Pro SSD in a Clevo M860TU.
Price 250$ 120GB Mercury Extreme Pro SSD 2.5" Serial-ATA... (SSDMX120) at OWC
It benchmark maximum 268 MB/s writing under Ubuntu 10.10, and near that also for writing on non-partitioned mode.
BTW, what you mean by you will use it for WOW? the SRS WOW effect? What do you mean by this? -
Well, mine has a Intel X25-M 160GB Gen2, and it works superbly. Can now be found as 80, 120 or 160GB. Other than that, you have allready mentioned those that are considered the best buy at the moment; The Crucial C300's, and the sandforce 1200 ones. OCZ Vertex or Agility 2. Or wait for Intel G3.
What the SSD does for me, is to give me a more "snappy" and responsive machine in nearly everything I do. And of course, file transfers, copying, loading and saving is much faster. Power consumption is down to, not that it helps much in a D900...
Short answer: Well worth the money, and no regrets. I can't ever go back to having a spin disk as system/program "disk", ever again. -

I installed an OCZ Vertex 60gig SSD in my 9262 with no probs and it has been running beautifully for the last 6 months.

Sorry for off topic. -
Well it's always better to not be addicted lol

Just want to tell that my SSD Maximum Read Rate hit 279.9 MB/s under Ubuntu 10.10 after i discovered that I had forgot to enable the AHCI (the reported-before 268MB/s was without AHCI) WOW this SSD is really amazing "OWC Mercure Extreme Pro 120GB" !!

Thats a good thing to remember.
After doin a little bit of research on the "other" ssds mysn.de had in their offer, i learned that samsung 470 series a a very good performers.
And we are talking samsung here, they are the mother and father of the ssds.
In the 470 series, they make their own controllers, and their own flash memory.
The name, 470 series, comes from the fact that the reads are 250 and the writes are 220)
This a one of the few ssds that writes fast as well.
I found an article comparing intel 2nd ge, crucial real ssd, and sandforce based drive.
The samsung scored exceptionaly well.

Any info on 3rd gen intel SSDs?
-
I am using the OCZ Vertex II 240GB in my 7200. It works fabulously and is blazing fast. No problems at all. The only thing better would be another drive in Raid 0
-
Read 280MB/s (advertised for 285MB/s)
Write 270MB/s (advertised for 275MB/s) -
Sequential read, and specially sequential write speed, are not very important stats for SSD's that are going to be used as a system/OS "disks".
Random read/write, access times and IOPS are the key qualities. And how well Garbage Collection (GC) and TRIM is implemented, to keep up the performance as the SSD ages. -
Zah, thats true.
The mopst important thing is how it handles random, low dimension read of files.
Because in real life situations zou rarelz write or read sequantial data.
Still, i think the samsung ssd 470 is a good performer.
The 3rd gen intel ssds are bount to appear january february time frame. Or early if we are lucky.
Wich is to much for me wait.
The reason i choose the samsung ssd instead of sandforce drive, is that im kinda of skeptical of their implementation.
I would rather have a ssd that score 9 points using files as they are, rather than a ssd scoring 10 points but with compressed files.
because when you are dealing with allready compressed files, performance takes major hit.
Still, even so, it seems ppl preffer sandforce drives.
Sandforce is suppose to launch another controller sandforce 2000. It suppose to be sata III, and have values in the 500-600 mb for writes and reads.
I wonder how those will do.
The bad part is we dont have any laptop for now with sata III interface.
