I've heard whispers that the current Clevo/Sager gaming laptops don't play nice with Sandforce-based SSDs. However, I can't really substantiate any of the rumors or find more information on the problem.

What is the issue with using a Sandforce SSD in the p170hm/np8170? If there is a workaround, what is it?

That was the case when the newest Sandforce drives were released a while back, especially with the Vertex 3 in particular. However, it seems that most are reporting newer firmware updates to be fixing the BSOD's and eliminating most of the initial problems..

I'd still recommend Intel drives though if you want guaranteed reliability.

I'd just avoid Sandforce out of principle now.

    Choose Intel or Crucial.

And it has nothing to do with Sager/ Clevo, it is SF ssd's that have the issue.

The Crucial M4 costs about the same and has near the performance of a Sandforce. My M4 has been flawless thus far in my system.

another possibility is the new(er) plextor m2p, which like the crucial and intel has got the marvel controller, and (at newegg) is cheaper than both crucial and intel (at least for the 128gb). i've had mine for a couple of weeks, and i haven't had any problems. i posted some benchmark results for it in the nbr ssd subforum.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/solid-state-drives-ssds-flash-storage/623457-plextor-m2p-first-impressions.html

it's not the benchmark champion, but it's competitive.

the new samsung 830 also has got some buzz, and i was going to jump on it, but decided, in the end, for the plextor based on price (it also comes bundled with acronis).

Yeah when I purchased my 256GB M4 it was $349.99 shipped from amazon. Then the price jumped $30 bucks the next day. Was a great deal while it lasted.
