Alright cesspool of computer knowledge, I need your help, pay heed to my call!

I'll be purchasing a new laptop in the very near future. The choice is clear to me, between one or the other versions of the two mentioned in the subject header. I'm looking at xoticpc and malibal as my most likely business transaction.

Why am I stumped? Well, I love having top of the line things, but in actuality I'm also quite frugal. The only top of the line purchase I've ever made in the computing world, was a $2k alienware desktop (preDell buy out) about 10 years ago. Since then I've built them myself. I simply love everything I've read about Clevo laptops.

I need a laptop for school, but I'd also like it to game with. I usually play MMO's and FPS'ers. I truly think all that I need is the Satori 170EM (or another brand with identicle components), but the thought of the desktop replacement is tempting. Just how much better do you all think the Nine would do in terms of gaming? The processors with the 10mb+ cache seem like they'd destroy the mobile version; however, processors with that much power really wouldn't be utilized. Temperature is also called into question due to the shear increase of power being used.

Could I get some insight and opinions from you guys on the pros/cons of the Nine vs the Satori?

I think the Nine pushes too far into the desktop range (12 lbs, 1-2 hr battery). To me, it is more like a portable desktop with an uninterruptible power supply than a laptop. A desktop with crippled components at that. If I had a mind to get something like this, I would just install a desktop computer directly into a wheeled suitcase with its own uninterruptible power supply. This is easily doable too with those micro form factor motherboards.

The 170EM is still a laptop (8.6 lbs, 2-3 hr battery w/o optimus?). It will not touch the Nine performance, but it will manage most current gen games on high at very nice frame rates and a few on ultra. The battery life is also decent for a gaming laptop and optimus should push that a bit further.

It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to attempt to max all settings, on a laptop, then you'll need the Nine. If you need a workstation and think high settings on games are acceptable then 170EM will do everything for you.

Cool, I appreciate your opinion, I'd think the Nine also pushes temp ranges too. The Ivy bridge desktop processor may do a better job filling the "Desktop replacement" position as well.

I agree about the size. If you plan on using it for school and moving it around, taking it to class, the p270/NP9270 is a beast, nothing you'd like to take around on a daily basis. Go for the NP9170 which is going to be much easier to take around.
For gaming though the NP9270 with a SLI config will get you almost double the gaming capabilities so if that was more important than mobility go that way.

The size & weight difference is more of a stylish issue; it won't make any difference unless you have to carry it by hand more than 1-2 hours in a row. My D901C is almost comparable and if I am careful I can handle it (with care) with only one hand to move it around the room.

OK. But now you need to figure out how to mount a display, not to mention where to set up a keyboard and mouse. How about building in a fold-a-away tray for this? Where is the sound going to go? Also how are you going to get external devices - USB, [FW], TB and the like hooked up when the unit is sitting in a suit case. (One can see where this is going.)

To me, it'd be much easier to consider something like this - High-Performance Portable Workstations, Mobile Workstations, Portable Computers
