    Hey guys,

So the screen on my Sager decided to totally konk out yesterday. I had it in it's laptop bag in my car on my way to my friends house. Nothing on top of it, nothing close enough that was going to hit it. Get to my friends house, take it out, open'er up, and bam, I see this: [IMG]
It's as if it had hit something that made it crack...yet there was nothing for it to hit?
Anyways, nothing I can do about it now, warranty is up, and so this brings me to my question.
I was going to sell my laptop anyways this summer, as I plan on getting a MBP for school. I want to get the most money out of it, so should I sell it as is? Or replace the screen and sell it that way? I've been looking up new screens and they seem to be anywhere from 150-200+.

    Thanks,

    Wes

You will likely get more out of it repairing the screen and selling it completely functional versus selling it with a broken screen. Another idea would be to part it out and you will find users that may want your GPU, Ram, HDD, CPU or Motherboard.

You should be able to use any standard 17" screen as long as:
    - It is 16:10 and not 16:9
    - It is CFL not LED backlit
150 is about right IF it is WUXGA.
You can get WSXGA+ for around 75$, but it might need a different cable.

Personally I would strongly recommend replacing the screen and I would also be willing to risk the cable incompatibility between resolutions. A WSXGA+ screen is a great replacement for a slightly older notebook like this if you want to run games at the native resolution.

Well, I'd rather not part it out as that'll be too much of a hassle for me, so replacing the screen seems to be the way to go.

Are there are sites you recommend (that ship to Canada :p) to buy the replacement LCD from, as I don't really want to buy off ebay for an LCD...

    Thanks.

That's going to cost you too much money to replace the display, plus you're intending to get another lappy (preferably smaller) for School.

I get dibs on the MOTHERBOARD! :D  :)

Well from what I've seen, the screen should only cost about 150 or so. And if I sold it as a whole, I'd get what, maybe 1000? So if I can net more by selling it all separately I'll go for it.

I don’t think you will get close to $1000, and surely not if the screen is damaged. What are your specs on that machine anyway? If you had a WUXGA screen, then replace it with that one. There is no substitute for WUXGA, especially not WSXGA. Games have not changed much at all since you got the notebook, so I’m sure you know what to expect from playing games at native resolutions, and I’m positive you know it’s not that much difference when you do play the game at WSXGA settings. It’s always better to be able to go high, and then back down, than to not be able to go high at all.

If you have good parts, you could fetch some good dough parting out the laptop.

    MOBO $100 - $150
CPU $100 - $300 depending on which model
GPU $250 - $400 depending on which model
MEMORY $30 - $100 depending on how much memory in GB
    KEYBOARD $20 in good condition
You could also just sell the keyboard alone with your housing with damaged screen, minus motherboard for around $100 - $200 It depends a lot on what kind of drive (DVD-RW or Bluray), fingerprint reader and what kind of camera it has if at all.

So as you see, that can really add up!

Obviously if I sold it as a whole I would get the screen repaired :p.

    But the specs are:
    T9600 2.8ghz
    4gb pc2 6400 ram
    320gb 7200rpm hd
    9800GT
    dvd-rw drive
    intel 5300 wireless card
    bluetooth
    fingerprint reader + webcam
    wuxga 17" screen
