    Hi,

    Silly question but what type of HDD should I buy for the Lotus P151HM1 hard drive caddy? I'm guessing a 2.5'' SATA 300 disk or SSD would be ideal but I'd like to make sure there are no gotchas before ordering one.

    Also, are there any pros/cons in using a caddy rather than the eSATA port? My thoughts are:
    + using the caddy is more convenient for travel / takes up less desk space and plugs;
    - using the caddy increases laptop temperature, I'm guessing;
    - using the caddy increases power usage (but I bought the 180W adapter, not the 120W one)
    - using the caddy restricts the choice of HDD form factor => less choice, expensive for 10,000 RPM drives.

    Despite the listed cons, I'd prefer to use the caddy since I don't need an expensive large capacity drive.

    I've an np8170 and the hdd caddy looks like it could fit a 2.5 hdd (haven't used mine yet since haven't filled up my secondary).

    i'd rather get a momentus xt or just a standard 7200rpm hdd for my secondary or tertiary drive for more space. but unless you need the speed of reading/writing on an ssd as your secondary drive then go for it.

    Any 2.5" 9.5mm SATA drive will work. Larger 12.5mm drives may not fit though. A caddy won't noticeably increase overall temps though, as it's pretty well separated from the main components and most drives don't produce that much heat. The same goes for power, as most drives are 5-10 watts at most, which is no more than the optical drive would have been using anyway. You're right though that it does restrict choices in so far as using a 2.5" internal drive compared to a full size external. Obviously the difference there is in portability and noise :)

    Ive got a caddy whre my HDD is placed. No extra noise to be heard. No warmth to be felt on the chassis. Its 5400rpm and acts as a storage container. I've got an exterlan USB DVD drive (see the sig in Extras) and its small like hell. So Im happy and can take it anywhere with me.

    Thanks for all the tips. It's good to know the caddy won't affect the temperature much. Based on the above and my preference for portability, I went for a 2.5'' 7200 RPM drive for the caddy.

    I'm looking forward to getting this laptop set up now (I even added a signature :eek:). Thanks to the Malibal posters for their fast PMs and replies and to their tech. team for shipping the laptop earlier than quoted.
