Hey guys, Ive been using my Np8150 with 6990M for awhile now. very happy with it. I have a few questions regarding a second HDD drive as I currently only have a 128GB m4 . Is it ok if i use a generic Caddy case or will it look ugly?
Also would the 500gb momentus XT be a good secondary drive or would the 7k750 be better or possibly something better? ( For me the size differences dont really matter What matters is the power consumption/noise)
Thanks!

You can use a generic caddy, as long as it fits the optical bay. You will have to remove the bezel from the optical drive and attach it to make it look flush.
As for the drive itself, you will not see a benefit of the hybrid drives in the secondary slot, so I recommend getting a standard 7200 RPM drive. From there, size would be your biggest decision. -

A Momentus XT is not worth it as a secondary drive because the 4GB flash portion only works as a primary drive. You're better off with a larger non hybrid drive for storage as it will be cheaper and perform the same. -

It won't have the bezel included, of course, but you can take the bezel off of your optical drive and put in on the caddy. It'll look like an optical drive is installed but the button won't work of course. This will keep the continuity of your bezel so you won't have any odd edges.
You can find a few youtube videos showing how to remove the optical drive bezel. There are basically two little tabs holding down the bezel, you'll need to use a flathead screwdriver to push the tabs in so it releases from the optical drive bay.Careful though, the tabs are easy to break.

You might want to look at a ~5400rpm large drive as apparently they are less power hungry / less heat and less noise, you would need to check the latest drive reviews for the best option.
You mentioned space is not a big deal then you have much more choices available.
Other alternative is a 2.5" USB3.0 enclosure as the weight and size is minimal and only running when connected / needed = optimal battery life.
They come in 1x or 2x 2.5" drive options and you can get more space or add a 2nd drive later if needed. 2x 2.5" is about 3/4inch thick or the front segment of your thumb length equivalent thickness.
WD has their new passport 1TB 2.5" USB3.0 drives for decent prices / not best prices but compact / solid performers with nice software. I have 2 of them.
If you get the more expensive WD version you can cable connect it to your wifi / lan router directly if that would be a option or another NAS type device.
This NAS concept could be a good for you as well with minimal power / heat issues and much less invasive on your laptop.
Hope this helps. These all worked for me.
