Which HD offered in the np8662 runs the coolest, excluding ssds?
I'm thinking it must be the 250GB 5400rpm drive, since it only has one spindle and spins slower than 7200rpm drives.
    Any suggestions?

Oh no my friend, it is far more complicated than choosing the right HD. My 320 GB 7200rpm runs cooler than some 250 GB 5400 rpm drives out here, so yeah I'm not too sure it could matter that much. But I am sure there will be a convergence towards the 5400 rpm being cooler. Dunno about the 250GB tho.

My 7200 RPM 500Gb Seagate Momentus runs cooler than my 5400 RPM 500GB Samsung by 5-10C. I also get slightly better performance in Saints Row 2.

It depends on brand as well as specs.

Well I'll post my specs so you know how mine runs:

Seagate 7200.3 320GB 7200 RPM hdd. Running 45c idle and 53c under full load.
