Ok, I wanted to post this thread in the "Want to buy" forum but I don't have the privileges as yet. I hope it's not too out of place here. If need be, I would request the moderators to please move it to the suitable sub-forum.
This thread arises out of this one, so I'm going to post my question publicly and hope that it can be brought to the attention of "Ahmed_p800".
Ahmed, I'm considering ordering a Sager or Asus notebook from Xotic PC to Dubai. Based on this thread, I'm aware that you've gone through the process in December '08.
1) Can you fill me in on any customs/duty fees and any additional fees charged when picking the machine up? Does the machine have to be picked up from the post office in Karama?
2) How long does it take for the notebook to arrive once it's been sent out by Xotic?
3) Are there any additional shipping charges in addition to the $250 for UPS International?
4) How do things like support and warranty work with international orders?
I'll ask more questions as I think of them.![]()
Edit: a few more questions.... although I can direct these to Xotic themselves
5) Are international orders eligible for the cash discount if paying by direct transfer?
6) Any idea whether any student discounts are valid for overseas students as well?

why you don't ask the reseller those question?
-
I can only tell you this much about UPS International shipping. This means that they will add ALL local VAT and custom fees into their shipping charge already. Meaning the machine will be arriving straight to your address. This is an arrangement between UPS and countries they have service with.
For International Support you can see the general statement here. It is better if you get a machine with manufacturers being available near you.

cheers ... -
Thanks for the replies guys.
@nexuscom: While some of these questions can probably be addressed by xotic themselves, there is a certain reassurance to be gained through the "on the ground" experience of someone else... especially when making what is (to me) a significant purchase.
Besides, I have heard conflicting information about the customs/duty fees, location of delivery etc. so I'd like to hear factual information from someone who's actually gone through the process.
Thanks! -
got a PM from Xirurg
As u know by now i ordered my Asus from xoticpc
Its the best site to import laptops from because they import directly and easily to the UAE.
i really recommend them for importing ur next laptop.
Ill try to answer ur questions now:
1- The machine will be delivered to ur door step no need to go to al karama
#####IMPORTANT NOTE: You will be asked to pay 450DHS for importing fees
################## This is a MUST,so make sure u have extra money.
2- Once ur payment is approved the shipping will take a week (more or less).
#####NOTE: You have to pay using wire transfer not credit card its not accepted by them, this wasted a lot of time for me.
3- As i said in point one 250$ + importing fees about 450 dirhams
4- Global warranty (ASUS not sager) is applicable in UAE i asked some sales man.
5- There was a discount but i dont remember exactly how much.
6- Sorry, i dont know about this point
#######Take care not to customize anything unless you make sure it doesnt void the global warranty!!
All in all its really good to import laptops here
cause even with all additional expenses its still worth it and you'll never find any lappy here in the UAE with same price/specs as imported laptops.
So my advice is........GO FOR IT!!

Ahmed, thank you so much for your very quick response! I don't think I should be having any more questions at this point, but I will get in touch if I think of anything.
I anticipate acquiring a notebook in the next 4-5 weeks and I'll make sure I post a follow up, which may be useful to anyone else considering a similar order.
Also a huge thanks to Xirurg for facilitating this exchange. You guys are awesome! -
welcome anytime

i bought my laptop from USA , PRO-STAR something like xoticpc,
i used ARAMEX shop and ship service to forward my package from USA to my country in Middle east.
The only way to pay is by Wire transfer from your bank account to them.
you will pay :
custom tax VAT
Shipping (according to weight)
IMP:
- Forget about the warranty if you are outside USA as you will pay for shipping both ways if you want send it for repair.
- Notebooks especially (Clevo, sager) is easy to disassemble it and change the defect part ,whatever Hard drive,Ram,............
- i do not recommend ASUS notebooks. -
-
Lol I'm not sure why this thread was moved here of all places, especially as I might be going for an Asus!
Whatever, it's an anomaly of a thread anyway.
icehell, I would also like to know why you wouldn't recommend Asus? Price wise, the G51Vx-A1 is very similar to the NP8662, but Asus offers global warranty and I know they have a presence here, so that would go in their favour (from my standpoint). -
notebooks is different from Descktop , you can find gateway make laptop with high GPU Nvidia 9800GT for only 1000$........
Asus always knows for faulty built like the latest W90....heat issue.
Clevo notebooks have only ordinary issues which mainly can be solved at home.
warranty is not useful for those kind of laptops ......Dell & HP .....etc.. better in replacement for default units. -
Alienware used to use some clevo chassis, but now they are owned by _dell they develop their own.
-
Asus has more issues with heating than Sager, as icehell pointed out.

First i dont know if u are living in the UAE
But i personally asked some asus sales man who told me that the global warranty is applicable here and he gave me a card (i can scan it for u)
I like this: quote(Forget about the warranty if you are outside USA as you will pay for shipping both ways if you want send it for repair.)
feels like we are still living in Middle-Ages
Secondly,,
I have my asus g50vt for a looooooooooooong time now and thank god everything works perfectly
so i dont know what you u are talking about specially point one
peace -
and it was just advice to get better machine with the same price range.
