Okay guys I am going to be leaving for college soon, and I plan to bring my desktop in my sig, but I also want to bring laptop.

I have about $1200 to spend, and I am thinking about the NP9130, but I have a few questions about it.

    1) How portable is it? Will I be able to bring it around campus and carry it in a backpack easily?

    2) Would I be able to take notes in class with it? Or is it too big?

    3) Is the build quality better than the Np8130?

    Thanks for you help,

Provided it fits well in your backpack I'd say it's not a bad choice. Certainly there are much smaller and lighter laptops out there but you know that already.

I'm not moving mine around very often, but I have a nice backpack for when I do and it works quite well. (Kensington Contour, plenty of room for all the stuff I carry around, although its probably on the small side for a day's worth of college textbooks in addition to the computer itself.)

How big are the tables/desks you'll be working out from?

I haven't seen any NP8130s in person, but no complaints as far as build quality on mine.

UPDATE: I've returned to school full-time last January. The backpack got very heavy with my monday's three classes last trimester, but I found it manageable, others might not. Depending on your exact schedule and class layout, battery life will be a concern. I had no trouble finding outlets, and otherwise could last an entire 3 hour class with a bit of power to spare if needed.

I carry my p150hm to class every day. Not too heavy, but definitely not light. The killer is the power brick. Definitely invest in a good backpack.

Most if my classes have full size tables. Working from laptop is great. Some classes have the small individual desks and it is a tight squeeze some times, but still not bad.

Last generation clevo is basically same to this generation build quality wise. Not much changed.

Definitely portable enough for note taking :) Go for it!

If you have to sell again, sell your desktop. Laptop easily is more useful than a desktop, if you could only have one.

And I agree. the P130 is easily portable. I laugh at people who think it's heavy and not portable, that's just silly. If you consider it to be heavy, you need to sign up for a gym membership immediately. I'm not tall at all and I can hold my P150EM betwee my thumb and index finger, it's not heavy at all.

Also I transported a 17" notebook to and from work everyday for years. Carrying this 15" monster is featherweight in comparison to that. And yeah when I was in college, I also transported around a 15/14" laptop around easily, and saw plenty of others doing it. It's no problem.

The only two issues I see with laptops is:
1). Easily stolen. Buy a Kensington lock. And transport your laptop is a good backpack. People carrying around a laptop side bag are just screaming, I have laptop, mug me. And since you are in college, ironically IMO, college has the highest concentration of stupid people... and lots of morons with Apple, and muggers LOVE stealing Apple products from stupid college kids, see college kid with laptop bag, mug, good chance it may be a MacBook. That's why I always used an all black, uninteresting, ugly backpack, that wasn't catching anyone's attention.
2). Many more chances of destroying your notebook. Friends spilling coffee on it. Friend's backpack slams into the back of your laptop. Friend stumbles onto you, and you fall, falling on your laptop...

I think weight is the least of your worries when it comes to laptops on campus.

You should look into the W110ER as well.

A plus for clevo laptops is that the design is not as flashy as Alienwares or MacBooks, for the the untrained eyes they look like any other "boring" business computer.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Keep in mind I also have an Ipad 2 that I plan to take notes with also, so I won't always have to bring the Sager. So with the Ipad and the Desktop, do you think I should get the Sager, or a 11-14" more portable laptop??

I'm going to go against the grain and say no. You already have a desktop that can play games, so there is no need to get a laptop that can do that too IMO. I would personally recommend getting a more portable laptop. The NP9130 isn't heavy, but it is thick and quite large. I don't know how the desks are at your college, but at mine, you wouldn't comfortably fit a NP9130 on a desk. 14" is probably the biggest the laptop could be to fit well. And then another big thing is that the battery life isn't fantastic. You can get about 3 hours out of it if you aren't doing demanding tasks, but depending on your schedule, that may not be enough. My college doesn't have power jacks in the classrooms, so I have to go with what my battery has. If I go to a class in the morning with my laptop, use 50% of the battery, I will have to go back to my room to charge it up before going to my next class instead of doing something else, like going the cafe and browsing the web or something.

Hey, thanks for exposing the other side. I also am bringing an Ipad 2 to college, so I could just bring that to class with a bluetooth keyboard.

The reason I am hesitant about buying a smaller and thinner laptop is because I have an ipad, and I feel like Ipads have started to replace ultrabooks, well some at least, and I would have an Ipad and a portable laptop that wouldn't be able to game very well.

    Will this one work?

I am looking for a slimmer one for my W110ER. Preferably in the UK, if not, overseas is fine.
