Well I just got a sager 8662. I was testing temperatures while playing cod 4. I am kinda worried by the results. Results are from around 40-60 minutes of gaming. It idles at around 30-40c. It was usually playing in the high 90ies c but it maxed out at 102. Is this acceptable for gaming or should I be worried. BTW I was using a zalman 2000 notebook cooler and still got these temperatures. BTW performance with still top notch through my entire play through.

Call the fire department, we got a five alarm on our hands. Peaking 102*C is not good. Have you cleaned out your vents?

yup, definitely make sure to clean out the vents.

and make sure to re-apply thermal compound when needed.

This laptop is brandnew. Would the vents already be dirty?

No they should not. There is probably a lack of thermal paste. Clean it and reapply.

I just opened my laptop and was a bit confused on where the GPU was I saw two different heat sinks, one cpu and one gpu i think. I can't tell which one is the gpu. Also I am not used to laptop parts as I have only worked building a deskptop computer before. I am worried about pulling the heatsinks too hard because they did not seem to want to come off. If anyone has guides I would appreciate it thanks.

You have to unscrew and remove the fan first. The wire are still connected, so dont pull it to hard, just move it to the side.. The heatsink at the mid of the laptop is the gpu.

Guys I managed to apply thermal paste to the gpu and I think its working great. Max temperature after 30 minutes of gaming is 84. Much lower than before is that safe for gaming?

Those are much better temps. They are still a little bit on the high side, but still safe.

if it was new, then the re-application of thermal compound was it.

glad to see the temps being much better. :)

are the bottom fan vents blocked?

sometimes the OEM leaves a black sticker that blocks the intake of air on the bottom... if its there, remove it.

the intake is not being blocked by a sticker. I find it strange that my temp is pretty low when not playing cod4. When i am just surfing the net its at 35c-40c. It also stays pretty low when I am playing sabatour (never got over 70c). FYI i am playing the original retail none patched version of cod 4 could that have something to do with it?

the latest... is it officially Clevo/Sager drivers?

    if yes, then thats good.

since the single fan is cooling both the CPU and GPU, check the CPU temps to see if its rising... and maybe check if its mounted securely (with a good amount of thermal compound... not so much that it would overflow when you secure down the heatsink)

also, you can undervolt your videocard (with the NiBiTor & nvflash method) to make it even cooler, and it would not affect the performance.

well i got the newest driver for the 260m off nvidia website. Should I only go to the sager website? and the cpu temps never max beyond 48c. I just redid the thermal compound so I am pretty sure its secure. I have never tried to undervolt my videocard before is it complicated if so do you know any guides.

BTW thanks for taking the time to help me

its not too hard to undervolt the GPU.

    here is a thread:
    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=115575

just make sure you backup the original firmware.

I use bootable USB flash drive to flash the firmware... its the easiest way to do it and do a blind recovery if there is a problem.

it might.. so you can test it.

make sure you fully uninstall one version (even the PhysX) before installing the next one.

then tell us what your findings are. :)

okay I just did a clean install of latest sager video drivers. I hope this works. Incase it don't help I am attempting to undervolt, but i am running into a problem. I am at work right now so I just have my laptop and a flashdrive. I was trying to make my flashdrive bootable but the guide i was following said i needed my windows 7 CD. Anyway how I can make my usb flash drive boot without using a cd?

20 minutes of cod 4 with a max gpu temp of 59c. I think those drivers did the trick gonna keep playing see how the temps go.

that is interesting..... I did not have any issue with COD4 with the newest drivers from nvidia website. Max temp was 72. Maybe I should use the sager one instead since 59 C is way cooler.

well after playing dirt 2 my gpu just maxed out at 100c. I mean i have been playing for like 4 hours though. Is it normal for the laptop gpu to get this hot after playing for a long period of time, or is something wrong?

A non-overclock 8662 should peak around 85C. Any higher is not normal.

I found something very strange today. As I played call of duty with out realizing my power adapter was not plugged in my gpu temperatures were suprisingly low. For around 30 minutes of playing COD4 with out my power adapter plugged in my temps stayed in the 45-55c range. When ever I plugged my Power adapter I watched as my gpu temp rised from 55c to 100c while playing cod4. After it reached 100c I unplugged my power adapter and kept playing. I then watched my GPU temp go from 100c to 55c again. after my gpu temp hit 55c while still playing cod 4, I plugged my power adapter back in and again watched my gpu go from 55c to 100c. After it hit 100c yet again I unpluged my power adapter and I watched it yet again go from 100c to 55c, while still playing cod4. I tested this while not gaming. As I am typing this message my gpu is staying in 39-45c temp when plugged in or not plugged in. Very Strange? Has anyone ever heard of a power adapter effecting the tempature of a gpu while gaming or under load? I also noticed the fan was much louder and running more often when the laptop was plugged vs not plugged in while playing cod 4

That is normal. When on battery, the GPU is limited to it's 3D desktop speeds.

COD4 is not a taxing game anymore... a mid-range card can play it at max resolution and settings.

enable V-Sync if you do not want extra frames to be rendered... which can help the temps since the GPU will not go to full load to render all possible frames.

That probably means that the lower GPU level is still capable of producing enough FPS to run COD4 smoothly. The COD4 engine isn't exactly complex and is very well optimized. Run Fraps or EVGA Precision and gauge how much FPS you are getting while plugged in and while on battery. You will be surprised how well the game runs on less resources.

Like Gophn suggested, you can enable vsync if your GPU is capable of maintaining a constant 60fps gameplay.

    hmm...interesting..

Maybe by faulty heatsink they mean that the heatpipe wasn't working properly to transfer heat to the fan radiator section.
