Should I get a 680M in my situation?

So I still have about 16 more days to change my 7970M for a 680M. My 7970M isn't overheating, it preforms up to my needs for now (League of Legends), and it seems to perform just fine.

But my main question is: I have the dough to upgrade to the 680M so should I just change it to avoid future issues?

My only real issue is Guild Wars 2 and I hope it'll be playable on high or max settings. Oh yeah my 3610QM is at idle (lowest: 1 core 40C, highest: 1 core 50C), is that normal? It gets to 70-71C max on League. The 7970M is 40C at idle and gets hardly to 60C on League. Is there a free game that you guys know the 7970M has utilization problems?

Get 680M. My 30-day window with Malibal has closed and my laptop isn't as future proof as I'd hope when I first built it. I will be waiting for the next best nVidia and switching to that. I will frame my 7970M with a caption at the bottom saying "Enduro fail."

Heh. I've been going around telling everyone that Nvidia is the way to go if you want a top of the line card, but I have to say that in your case it sounds like you don't NEED a top of the line card. If you plan on playing other games in the near future, then ignore this, but it sounds to me like you'd be paying 250 dollars to play a free game. That being said, if you ended up needing a better card, say... a year down the line, you'll probably be able to do better than the 680m by then.

I mainly bought the 7970M for Guild Wars 2 so I expect this GPU to take on that task. (I haven't try but does anyone know how well the 7970M did in the stress or beta of GW2)?

Get 680m if you have extra.

I think you don't really need the gtx 680m to play gw2 since it's a mmorpg, those games usually need a good cpu more than a 200000000000$ vga.

i switched from 7970 to 680m and i am so glad i did. I played GW2 beta on 7970 and it was alright. i only got 60% utilization and pretty large variances in FPS... but it was playable. The 680 caps it out and runs it smooth as butter with steady framerates

There is GW2 thread in the gaming card forum. I would think the 7970M would probably be ok. Graphics are very good for a mmo and it was not that optimized during the beta test weekends so it was tough on some cards.

I was able to play with a 5870M with around 30-40fps ( last beta ) in PvE but turned down settings. PvP was another issue. The card couldn't handle it.

I went with a 680M because I don't want to mess around as this will be one of my main games along with BF3.

Try Rift then to test for under-utilization.

Last stress test this month we get 99% utilization with the 7970M. But since the game is very demanding in big event, it's pretty hard to lower the setting to gain some fps since the utilization get lower when you lower the setting. sPvP and PvE was fine. In big WvW you have something like 20-35 fps in ultra, you will get the same thing with the 680M, until you lower your setting.

I wish I can trade my 7970M for a 680M. Not being able to lower the setting is pretty lame.

The only issue here now is that I know it'll take longer than 3 weeks for my laptop to get back to me and by that time GW2 would've already come out =(. This would definitely waste my Pre-purchase + bored me to death.

Yeah go with the 680... The magnitude of issues with the 7970M and AMD's stance on it (aka silence and topic deletion) the cost difference simply isn't worth the headache imho.

I'm RMAing my laptop and getting a 680. First and last time I ever trust AMD.

It's very hard to recommend AMD at the moment.
IMO their attitude towards the whole issue is just as disappointing as the actual card problems.

IMHO, if you can afford it, get the 680m. It's too bad nVidia has to overprice their GPU's by so much, because it really is a stiff price increase.

Wait it out. You don't play games that demanding, and by the time you do you the AMD drivers would have been fixed and/or those 250 bucks could get you a better upgrade down the line.
