So I realized I had not updated my 9800MGTX graphics driver since I got my Sager 5796 back when school started, so I looked on the Sager website and they still have that same driver. The Nvidia website has a much new driver (obviously) but it says I should only install drivers from my computer manufacturers website. Is that true? Should I update my driver anyway?

New question...I downloaded the correct driver that Nvidia said I should (triple checked) but when I try to install it it says it found no drivers compatible with my system. What is the deal?

    Hi mmdrewser,
Did you try a clean install?

Here's a step by step guide on the best way of updating the drivers, see if it helps!

    Download driver cleaner here: http://files.filefront.com/DCProSetupexe/;6743017;/fileinfo.html
this is a great program which will delete all traces of drivers as sometimes when you uninstall them they leave behind files which can cause issues when you come to install new drivers. We’ll use this in a minute

Download the latest drivers for your operating system 32/64bit in post above.

Extract/ copy the files to a temporary directory such as c:\temp

Go to the control panel > program and features > scroll down the list and find NVIDIA > then select NVIDIA and click uninstall. It will ask if you want to restart the system.. click yes

Press F8 on startup and go into windows in safe mode.

Run driver cleaner and select NVIDIA drivers.. then clean.

Go to the control panel > system> device manager > graphics card. Right click on any present and click uninstall

Restart the system and go into windows normally. Install the NVIDIA drivers which you put into a temporary folder

Restart the system.. and fingers crossed all should be well

I thought not every 9800M GTX are compatible with the driver. If I remember correctly, you have to flash the card to a different biosversion. Someone wiser than me knows which version you have to flash to.

This is true depending on which bios you have it will give you an error message saying no compatible devices. With a little hunting around I figured out a way to still use the latest Notebook drivers with out having to flash my card..

You have to go under device manger right click the 9800M gtx and hit update driver and select you own driver, then do the I have the disc method which is going to have you browse through the Nvidia folder to find the correct driver to select. According to the List Devices.txt file that came with the new Nvidia laptop drivers, you need to browse into the folder you extracted the new drivers into and select the appropriate driver which was driver 'NVCF.INF' select that and you should now be able to select the 9800M GTX from the list of cards and you are good to go..

I would also recommended downloading the latest Physx drivers from Nvidia's site I was way out of date on mine..
