    I currently own a NP5797 (M570ETU).

I already have the QX9300, but I am considering upgrading my old 8800M GTX to a 280M GTX to max out the system.

Would this be worth it, or should I just buy a new system?
I haven't kept up with the latest stuff being released on to the market, so I dunno if a QX9300 + 280M GTX is outdated or still worth it...

Well, do you need the extra power? Do you want more FPS from newer games? We personally don't know your situation so you have to elaborate more :p

Well my 8800M GTX is broken, so I can only run it at 450mhz core clock and 360/720 mhz memory clock. That takes away quite a few FPS in most games.

Ah then for sure. I would recommend calling up a reseller, asking them if the upgrade will work, and then buy graphics card from them. At least it'll come with warranty and you know the company will be trustworthy.

This eBay seller is taking $600 or best offer.

Unless you can find one cheaply, a new card may cost 50% of a new W860CU. I'd consider that carefully.

A new one will cost you about 50% more than a new GPU but with the new system with for example a GTX 285M or ATI 5870 you get better performance, newer architecture and better future upgrade potential. You could sell your QX9300 and / or the laptop for parts.

The QX9300 + 280M GTX are still a formidable pair and will play recent games really well though. If new mobile GPU's didn't cost so much it would be a very easy decision.

How is it broken? Is something physical? Have you tried to heat it (oven trick)? If you can repair it then wait for the price drop of the 280M, If not then you will have buy a new one and in that case I would go for the 280M.

I've considered trying the oven trick, yes.
