Sigh... Spilled wine on my Sager NP8662 - Replacement Keyboard and Touchpad?

Ok, I spilled wine on my Sager NP8662 (Clevo M860TU). Not much really, but enough to cause some headache. First time ever I have owned a laptop that I had something like that happen. Well, I shut down the machine immediately, turned it over and let it dry for a bit. It was late at night, so I didn't have time to get at it until next day.

I eventually opened it all up. Looks like the spill was contained pretty much in the keyboard and touchpad and buttons. I did remove everything, and cleaned the motherboard thorougly with 99.999% isopropyl alcohol. Detached touchpad itself and ribbon cables and thorougly cleaned them. Well, machine itself runs fine. I put it through a 12+ hour torture test without any issue.

However, the keyboard acts up and frequently when I start the machine it starts beeping like mad. I detached the keyboard and use a USB one and everything is fine.

The touchpad also acts up. It seemed to be working fine but seems sometimes the left click gets "stuck". Although I really don't know if the touchpad ever did work because I always used a wireless USB mouse, which still works great.

That being said, where can I get a replacement keyboard, fairly cheap as well as the touchpad and buttons (comes with fingerprint reader too)? Those connectors on the touchpad seemed to have gotten a good dose of the wine (lush!).

I found a replacement keyboard on eBay for ~$18 shipped. Retail is $45. Sager is the only place I could find with the trackpad and costs $60 for the pad and buttons with fingerprint reader.

When I had the infamous coffee spill, my keyboard also stopped functioning properly. It behaved as if the Ctrl key was always being pressed, and no amount of cleaning had an effect.

I ended up buying a cheap USB keyboard, because I'm not sure whether the malfunction is solely a keyboard issue, or if it's something deeper in the motherboard. I'd hate to spend the $60, just to find out that the new keyboard has the same issues, once plugged in.

Well, the keyboard was only about $18 shipped. I ordered it already. I'm using a USB keyboard right now.

It's the touchpad acting wonky too, but the touchpad with buttons, cables etc costs $60. I think it's just the button board that's having issues. So I think I will see if I can get the button board first (hopefully about half price) and if that fixes the problem I'm good to go.

Problem is I was planning on selling this machine soon. I still can, but I couldn't in good conscience sell it without disclosing the spill. I mean it runs great otherwise. Put it through a torture test (prime95 + 3DMark Vantage running simultaneiously) and played Bad Company 2 for hours on it already with no issue. Actually with the ICD7 I put on the CPU and GPU temps are about 8C cooler now. LOL.

I feel I really got everything cleaned up well. Just the keyboard and touchpad area got the brunt of it and just got in somewhere that makes it act wonky.

I would go for the ebay solution as well. Did not find a touchpad for you, but I also did not find the keyboard (for what did you search?), so this could mean nothing at all.

    Bytales: Cheers :p

Well the part number for the keyboard is 6-80-M55G0-013-1 I also found out that the keyboard 6-80-M55G0-011-1 (old Alienware M17) is compatible, most likely an earlier version and made a couple internal changes that don't mean much to end users.

I think I just searched for both part numbers and then also Clevo keyboard.

We'll see. If I can get it working without issue, then I'll be selling it. I'll try here first, and offer a decent discount though (probably $800 shipped). Otherwise it's going on eBay for $900.

Can't the keyboard of the clevo unit be replaced by a backlit keyboard like the alienware has ?

I think this was from a much earlier Alienware version without backlit keyboard. Plus you'd need the electrical connections for it to work.

Didn't get the keyboard today. Hopefully tomorrow.

I just got the keyboard. Typing with it right now and so far works great. Only difference between the keyboards is the original keyboard on the laptop has extra graphics on the F1 key (mousepad on/off), F2 key (LCD on/off), tilde ~ key (Play/pause). I just popped the keys off the original keyboard and put them on the new one. Like new.

Now all I have to to do is replace the touchpad and I should be good to go.

Glad to hear that it was just a keyboard/touchpad replacement. I spilled Dew on my M17, then jumped up in a panic and knocked it off my TV table. Cracked LCD and casing. Wouldn't POST. Had to send it to Alienware for estimate. Every part except the Q9300 needs to be replaced. Insurance is giving me $1500 . Just ordered an M17X yesterday. So it could have been be worse!

On a positive note, I'm getting a new system so I can't complain too much.

It was a personal articles policy specifically for computers. Sadly, it was not what I thought I was buying. The insurance rep told me that if anything happened to it, I could get the money and replace the machine immediately. Which is what I asked for. Didn't know they would do everything possible (including build me a completely new refurbished system out of frankenstein parts) before paying me what the system was worth to replace. So I took the repair payment and put it towards a new M17X. I'm not going to repair a laptop that isn't manufactured anymore.

I'm sure if you had homeowners or a similar policy you could get your damages paid for. I didn't have a deductable on my policy but on a homeowners I'm sure you would. Now I just bought the Advanced plan from Dell so they can repair it without the BS.

Yeah, seems most warranties work that way. They'll replace every stinkin part at three times the price but never replace the whole unit with something comparable. I have an appliance service plan like that. The tech that I had out one time said they could rebuild my furnace from the ground up, but they couldn't replace it. So stupid.

I believe my homeowners has a $250 deductible on $10,000 worth of electronics. I figure $250 is cheaper than an extended plan because it will cover any laptop I ever buy at any time, and it was a minimal increase in my overall homeowner's insurance. Problem is I think it will only cover replacement of the laptop and not repair costs, complete opposite issue. In other words I believe the unit has to be totaled to get the money for it. That's easily accomplished. lol.

LOL. I would have taken that policy. There are definitely ways of totalling your laptop. But in my case, they would've repaired it even if I threw it on the grill for an hour. Now I know.

I'm happy to report, that I received the new keyboard, and it works perfectly.

I bought this model, and all of the keys/symbols matched up perfectly.

Has anyone ever tried to replace a clevo keyboard with a backlit keyboard.. an alienware for example. I know the ribbons would have to align and there are issues with backlighting, but is it possible?

I was wondering the same thing, and came across this thread:
    Backlit Keyboards - XOTICPC Forums

Specifically post #7. I haven't verified, but apparently Sager says there's no option.

Damn! I was really hoping that was not true. I would love a larger backlit keyboard. Guess I will just have to tilt the screen if I really can't find a key I am looking for. Thanks for the info.
