So I've been looking to buy the Sager NP5790 for a while now, but I've been wondering if I should hold off until I the 8700 GT comes out so that I can play DX10 games.
My question is, since it seems like the 7950 is still the better card, can I upgrade to the 8700 (or perhaps even the 8800 when it comes out) sometime down the road, or am I stuck with the 7950?

First off, there aren't that many DX10 games out there anyway. Secondly, the 8700GT is an inferior card compared to the 7950GXT. Many of us are waiting for the fingerprint reader to be included as well as the 8800 series GPU to make the strike. But if ya can't wait and need a lappie right away, the NP5790 is the best bang for the bucks out there. If ya got the money (it's about $800 bucks more than Sager's offering), I would recommend going to Killernotebooks.com and check out their rendition based on the Clevo 570RU chassis. It's called the Executioner-SR.

The cooling modification that they offer standard on every Executioner-SR is just awesome!!!

Plus, K|N ships with the fingerprint reader integrated and also offer the Core 2 Extreme x7800 at 2.6GHz unclocked. The Core 2 Extreme x7800 will cost you $499 more. Like I said, if you can afford ~$800 more, the cooling mod is definitely worth it! -
As of so far, I think any information regarding the fabled 8800m is empirical, as it's not out yet so it's impossible to tell if it's going to be too hot or have too much power requirements to be compatible, also, there's no telling how much it'll cost of worse, if it'll be compatible.

Excellent point! Ya can't comment on something that does not exist, yet.
I wish that Clevo would come up with something like the Alienware m9750 with 2 HD's and SLI GPU's. The Clevo 901c is, without any argument, a beast of a machine, but it's too darn heavy at 12 lbs and looks like an ugly box that I would hate to lug around from airport to airport. Portability is a big issue for notebook owners like me. So why not buy the Alienware m9750? Well, it's Alienware! Their support sucks. They cost an arm and a leg. Just check out their outrageous price for RAM upgrade and you'll know what I mean. -
Well as with any design that seems to be a lot thinner for the specs than normal, I think Alienware might've made a lot of compromises in the design. The Clevo, as you mentioned, is huge, but from reports from people who buy it, the notebook runs ice cube cool, and is very quiet. Who knows how hot the Alienware runs or how silent it is, or in the long term, how reliable or crippled it may be due to heat issues.

assuming it's possible, upgrading to a 8800 down the road will probably cost at least $300-400, so it also depends on how much total you want to spend
-
It'll cost more than $300-400, especially since it's a laptop MXM card and it's also an 8800. Expect $500-600.

Go for the DX9 card. As of now, it's better than any DX10 cards we've seen. And the 7950GTX will handle most anything you throw at it. Even Crysis. I played it on a 7900 desktop today, and that's worse than the 7950. Granted, not full settings, but it was playable.
In a couple of years or so, or when Windows 7.0 comes out, get a new card for the new OS and games. -
