Since the 8662 is so cheap, is it worth $1300?

great specs for such a price i think, 2.5 ghz c2d, gtx 260m, 4 gigs ram, 320 gb HD... everything that one needs without having to opt for bleeding edge technology. and probably an insignificant difference in gaming between the 8690. if so, is there any reason NOT to buy the 8662 over the 8690?

The 8662 is a great machine. One of my friends recently bought one after my recommendation with no regrets, even though the 8690 is more current. As you have already said, if you are not interested in bleeding edge, the 8662 should do you well.

What it doesn't have is upgradeability, MXM 2.1 is done with. But the 260M and C2D will still handle any current game just fine. At $1300, it's a pretty good deal. The chassis handles the heat well. The NP8690 had to be more robust to handle the i7 and future GPUs.

AFAIK some users reported HDD heat issues, but that was way back when it was initially released. I believe it has been fixed now. Besides that I haven't heard of any non-isolated issues with the machine. Most users on this forum are generally pleased with theirs. Be sure to also check out the review from NBR. Good luck.

I have an NP8662 and am very happy with it. I considered the MXM issue, but I figure I can update the CPU to a Quad later, and depending on overclockability of my GPU, update to a GTX 280m. I have never had an MXM GPU before, but I'm hoping down the road there will be some heavily modified/overclocked 280m that I can pop in here. Otherwise, the 260m should suffice.

I have had no HDD heat issues either.

I got mine with a P9700 2.8GHz 25W, 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD, 1680x1050 screen for under $1500 in August 2009. What I liked most was the 25W P9700. Better battery life and runs cooler.

    Definitely worth $1300.

It's much better built than any Asus or Gateway you'll get in this price range.
