Can someone tell me if there is a slim power adapter that I can buy to charge my Sager NP9150 while I am traveling? The one that came with my new laptop is actually bigger and heavier than the one for my other Sager that I bought 4 years ago. It's ridiculous. I'm headed out of the country next week and would love to find a new adapter prior to leaving. If anyone can recommend one pretty quickly I would appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance

Yeah I wouldn't say no to something like that either, I'm not quite sure why it has to be so big and heavy...

No. Nothing that could deliver that much power exists in a small form factor, and if you found one advertising to do that it would probably be a scam. It has to be big and heavy to accommodate the capacitors needed to deliver 180W of power. Do you really think they made it this way on purpose?

I read somewhere on the forum about a 180W PSU that is smaller, just can't remember where... I'll have a search.

Well how much power does it require if you're not gaming, surely not the 220W mine comes with? Although I'm not certain it'd be possible to get the power requirements down to what a plane could handle with their power per seat I think is limited to 75W or something, but it would be nice! :)

u can just use a slim lightweight 90W universal adapter as long as ure not planning to game on ur travels, no problem whatsoever :) on idle to light load it just draws between 35-60W. just remember to keep all ur powersaving features enabled and not start any game accidentally cuz then ur laptop will crash and blink out :p

im sorry to put it like that but thats just BS ;)

worst thatll happen under heavy load is ur laptop switching off cuz it doesnt get enough power. that being said, since ure not gonna do any heavyduty stuff on ur travels anyways ud be good to go :) besides, ive seen several HM users who did the same with their machines, using a 90W adapter at work for example and to this date i havent heard any "horror stories" :p

belkin and kensington are known to produce some diverse universal notebook PSUs, check google, amazon, etc to find the appropriate models :) maybe there even is a nice n slim 120W adapter which would provide a bit more headroom without cutbacks in size and weight.

    cheers

Thanks everyone for all of the help. I need this crazy machine because I am a 3D artist/graphic/web artist, but I'll be going out of the country for 2 months and will need to use my laptop only for school work (email, internet, maybe using Word too.) The most that I will be doing is transferring photos from my camera to my laptop to save, but no need to view. I'll have my regular adapter back at the apartment. I just would like something slimmer that I can take instead if i want to sit at a cafe for a bit to work.

And yes, I know that they don't make them this size on purpose, my comment about this brick being larger than my other one is that you would have thought that over the last 4 years technology would have been able to create a lighter, smaller, more powerful adapter by now. Just disappointed is all.

Thanks everyone for the help. I think I'll check out some of the 90W or 120W adapters.

Any suggestions on using a 150w PSU I place of the 180w?

Has anyone seen a lower powered and smaller traveling DC adaptor?

If you have a Kill a watt you can tell exactly how much power you're really using and then either use your laptop accordingly or buy a power supply that you know will be enough for what you need to do. If you don't have one, whenever I get my laptop I can let you know what it says. Luckily the cigerette lighter outlets in my vehicle say they are rated for 200w so for traveling I should be okay with an invertor even though that doesn't really help w/ the size. Well the one in the trunk actually says 180 on it, but in the owners manual it says 200

They sell a very similar device at Harbor Freight for a reasonable price, in case you wanted to pick one up yourself & check it out (as well as other things, like checking how much power your electronics use).

Also keep in mind that not all users will use the same amount of power. I may run Minecraft on mine and not use the same power as someone else running Skyrim with everything on top settings. (or I might, we'll see how many mods & texture packs I use once I have a laptop that'll run it. :D )

Best thing to do is stress your system to max with something like Prime95 + Furmark or MSI Kombustor and read power draw from the wall, then assume ~ 90% efficiency (although will likely be less but for safety factor) so multiply that by 0.9 and that should tell you your approx peak power draw. To be honest I'd be leary of having anything less than what your peak power draw could be.

As long as the switching circuit can manage it, it could also result in oscillation from AC to Battery power and back. I mean it should be safe, but there is always a potential for a badly matched (weak, not properly regulated) adapter and poor MB controller to create quite some hardware issues.

just for funsies,i checked my max power consumption when on powersaving and gpu downclocked via nvidia inspector: running furmark and prime95 i barely got 75w peak usage so in my case a 90w psu would be more than sufficient :)

hmm, did the same, pulled 191W when cpu and gpu are at 100% (using furmark 3D and intelburn test).

are u sure ur cpu was on powersaving mode? (means SB wont clock higher than 800 Mhz and IB not higher than 1200 Mhz, turbo boost disabled)
also, as mentioned, i made sure to severely downclock my 485M via Nvidia Inspector. 2D/3D clocks thus stay locked at 45 Mhz Core / 116 Mhz Mem :)
