Ok I just received this notebook wednesday night, and for the most part it runs great, except for one truly grating problem. It takes about five to ten minutes for it to shutdown. Seriously. My OS is windows xp.

Did you put programs on it?
My DELL XPS M1710 was like that and after trying to remove some programs it is normal now.

There is such a program as TuneXp . Just use the defragment option in it. It`s under the thread written by Lex , in Windows and OS , at Vista tweaks. Although intended for Vista, the program mentioned worked nicely on my Hp nx9420 which shuts down/starts super fast.
I also use hibernate everytime, never shutdown.

a list of apps installed might help, for example any p2p applications may be set to wait until a break in down/uploads before disconnecting, this could apply to a lot of apps

Steam on mine doesnt like to be running at shutdown, but thats not a problem really you just get an end task on it :)
